448.0. "San Jose Dist DB Event" by DPDMAI::DAVISGB (Gil Davis DTN 554-7245) Tue Oct 03 1989 17:37
Any idea of who's going to represent Digital? Would be interesting to see
the meeting notes...
DISTRIBUTED DATABASE EVENT
PRESENTED BY THE RELATIONAL INSTITUTE AT THE SAN JOSE FAIRMONT
OCTOBER 24-26
WITH DR. E.F. CODD, CHRIS DATE AND COLIN WHITE
ABOUT THIS CONFERENCE...
A PROFILE FOR THE FUTURE
Distributed database is a hot topic. In some respects the
emergence of true distributed systems represents the most
significant event in the database marketplace since the
emergency of the first true relational system at the beginning
of the 1980's. Distributed database systems are the trend
today, and for a good reason. ATTEND THIS EVENT AND LEARN WHY
THIS IS SO.
DISTRIBUTED... A VENDOR APPROACH
The Relational Institute has designed this event which will
allow leading vendors to present their products in a technical
format. Attendees will be able to take an in-depth look at many
of the distributed database technologies and applications. Here
is an opportunity to track down the distributed path your
favorite vendor has gone.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Data processing of computer science professionals, system
analysts, communication specialist, application programmers,
database administrators, system architects, and managers in
all areas.
EVENT FORMAT
DAY 1: OCTOBER 24
DISTRIBUTED DATABASE THEORY AND PRACTICE
by Chris Date and Colin White
This is an intensive on-day seminar in which you will learn
exactly what it means for a database system to be distributed
why distributed DBMSs are desirable, and what is happening in
the world of distributed database systems today.
o Learn about
- The basic concepts
- Advantages and disadvantages
- What IBM is doing
- The twelve rules of distributed database and how they apply
- Heterongeneous DDBMSs and how Gateway Technologies apply
- Applying the technology
- The marketplace
- Issues and applications
- Various customer examples
- Future directions
DAY 2: OCTOBER 25
LOCKING OUT??_ A DISCUSSION ON NON-LOCKING CONCURRENCY CONTROL
by Risto Kivivuori
o He will cover topics such as
- Consistency: A logical view on data, rather than a physical
state
- Can anything more relaxed than predicate locking suffice?
- Memories of time: Reality verses computer data
- The one-hundred dollar transfer transaction and a management
report
- Message travel times with different hardware platforms
- Relativity of time
- We cannot afford distributed transactions...or can we?
- First Shot at the classical transaction paradigm
- The real distributed transaction: Message contents and
event sequence
- Resource handlers and other attributes
- Atomicity in a distributed environment
- Lids instead of locks
- Message logs facilitate autonomous recovery
- Beware of horizontal splits
- The killer: Where is ...?
- The time of distribution
DAY 3: OCTOBER 26
REDEPLOYMENT OF DATA: DISTRIBUTION INDEPENDENCE
by Dr. E.F. Codd
Distribution independence is one of the five ways a user's
investment is protected if a relational DBMS is acquired.
First, it means that application programs that were developed
for a nondistributed version of a relational DBMS can run
correctly without change on a distributed of that same DBMS,
even after the data has been distributed across several sites.
Second, the data may be redistributed across these and possibly
other sites without affecting the correctness of application
programs. This ease of redistribution is an important
requirement for every company that acquires a distributed
database management system:a requirement that companies often
overlook.
o Topics to be covered:
- What is Distribution Independence (DI)?
- Why is DI needed by institutions with distributed databases?
- What RM/V2 features provide necessary logical support of DI?
- Why two copies of global catalog at two distinct sites?
- Name resolution handled by local catalogs
- Global catalog, an important tool for redeployment of data
- The 3 main parts of a global catalog (GC1, GC2, GC3)
- Redeployemnt principles
- Five reasons why the relational approach is leading in
managing distributed databases
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
DR. E.F. CODD
Dr. Codd is the world's leading authority on relational database
technology. He is the sole creator of the original relational
model of data, including both the relational algebra and the
relational calculus. Dr. Codd is a Fellow of IBM, recipient of
the 1981 ACM TURING AWARD, the most prestigious award in
computer science, and elected member of the National Academy of
Engineering. He is President of The Relational Institute, a
nonprofit research and education company and Chief Scientist
of Codd and Date International, a leading consultancy in
database management and concomitant technology. Dr. Codd is the
author of a new textbook. "The Relational Model of Database
Management; Version 2," published by Addison Wesley.
CHRIS DATE
Chris Date is an independent author, lecturer, and consultant
specializing in relational database systems. He is a cofounder
with Dr. E.F. Codd, of both The Relational Institute and Codd
and Date International. He was previously a database specialist
at the IBM Santa Teresa Laboratory in San Jose, California,
where he was involved in technical planning and externals design
for the IBM relational products SQL/DS and DB2. Mr. Dates is
best know for his books, in particular, "An Introduction to
Database Systems," Volume I (now in its fourth edition), which
is the standard text in the field.
COLIN WHITE
Colin White is an independent consultant and editor of InfoDB,
a technical journal specializing in large systems database.
He also lectures at The Relational Institute and works with
Codd and Date International. He was an IMS, VM, and UNIX-based
DB/DC systems. He has extensive experience with numerous
database products and has lectured throughout the US, Europe,
Australia, South America, and the Far East.
RISTO KIVIVUORI
Risto Kivivouri is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of
of The VIA Group, Helsinki, Finland. He made Finland a "PL/I
Country." He also started Finlands first Software company.
In 1985, he established the VIA Group for implementing "VIA
Distributed Relational Environment," a software solution for
DDBMS in personal networks. He is responsible for the design
and implementation of a relational data manipulation language
that was used as a model in ADR/IDEAL. He is the inventor of
new data storage and search algorithms.
