I'm new to the ORACLE game and am looking for a recommendation on
the implementation of SQL*NET. The concerns I have are around
system management and security.
ORACLEs documention for implementing SQL*NET states the following.
(SQL*NET DECnet User's Guide)
"Create a DECNET account on your system to be used as a default
when the network user does not explicitly supply access control
information. ... (They do say you can call it something else
besides DECNET)
They also make recommendations for setting up proxy accounts, not
creating a directory for this account so as not to build up
netserver.log files, and in general don't seem to be to concerned
about any security measures.
If you've implemented SQL*NET for remote database access please
take a few moments here (or VAXmail berkly::serksnis_ka) and share.
Thank you,
Kathy

Kathy,
Wish I could help, I understand your frustration, Oracles doc set is
poor, along with most of their product. I assume you are in delivery
and probably a resident. Come on guys, yes all of us would like to be
in all Digital sites, but many of us are sold as specialists and have
to support stuff like Oracle, Sybase ect. My last residency my only
low score on the survey was because I didn't know MS-word. So please
understand when a question is asked on how to do something in Oracle,
Ingres ect that we are not selling it, we have to support it because
some sleaze salesman from brand X pulled the wool over the customers
eyes. Our reviews come from the customer, and if we tell him we
aren't going to support him because he is using an inferior product we
won't last long in delivery. I often time tell the customer the
strenghts of our products, and maybe say that this new release should
be re-evaluated, but I don't bash what he has already decided on, at
least not until he is already bashing it himself for what it won't do.
Good luck on you project (you'll need it)
Glenn Sparks (who gets to work in an all digital environment now and
loves it, whoops, except for the compaq pc for a terminal)
