432.0. "Latest on Sybase for Unix/Ultrix?" by KYOA::HANSON (Where'd he get those wonderful toys?) Tue Sep 19 1989 18:13

    What's the latest and greatest...?

    Does SYBASE run under RISC/ULTRIX? (The last I saw, they had an
    implementation on SUN/UNIX, but the material is old...)

    If not, what Unix platform(s) do they run on?

    Thx,
    Bob

432.1When will SYBASE run on ULTRIX/RISC ?KETJE::DEVOSLife is too short to feel guilty...Tue Oct 10 1989 12:3633
	My 'potential' customer is waiting for SYBASE on ULTRIX/RISC
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    	A customer did a lot of benchmarks in order to choose a 4GL.
    	They offered us a whole list with many questions concerning
    	- the database
    	- the 4gl
    	- the system
    	- the network...

    	etc.

    	In the shortlist we still have :
    	- ORACLE (on Bull)
    	- SYBASE (on SUN-unix)
    	- RALLY/RDB (on VAX)

    	After a lot of evaluation the customer wants
    	1. SYBASE
    	2. OUR NETWORK
    	3. UNIX

    	My question now is :

    	WHEN WILL SYBASE BE PORTED ON DECstations ?
    	This is a multi million dollar project ...win or lose...

    	Anybody any idea...

    	Regards
    	Stefaan Devos  (KETJE::DEVOS)

I'd suggest you call SYBASE (415) 596-3500 and ask them. SYBASE is not
a Digital product under any form of agreement.

SYBASE on the DECstations IS announced (Digital News, October 2, Page
9), but no availability information is included in the article.

Digital's database product for Ultrix is To-Be-Announced, but has been program
announced as being based on INGRES.

it's out; i played with it for quite a while at unix-expo last week here in nyc;
the workbench (dwb) interface is quite a step backward from the UIS interface
i've used; we've managed to get the Ultrix client talking via tcp/ip
(wollogon) to a vms server as an interim for some customers of ours

    So, does Sybase run under Ultrix/RISC? I have a customer who is
    considering the same scenario as .0 Sybase/Ultrix/RISC. I have to
    see him real soon, (2 days), and am trying to get a grip on the
    competitive information for Sybase/RISC/Ultrix. The fear here is
    losing the whole thing to SUN/Sybase.

    Also, what kind of effort would be required to "port" a Sybase
    application developed under RISC/Ultrix to VAX/VMS? ie. pros/cons.

    P.S. They have tentatively chosen Sybase as the database strategy
    and at this time we cannot bring up Ultrix SQL. So I just need info
    on pros/cons of Sybase on our RISC/Ultrix.

    Thanks in advance.
