423.0. "Oracle and RISC/Ultrix" by CSOA1::SMITH_JIM () Mon Sep 11 1989 07:48

A couple of questions related to our favorite database company that
    rhymes with manacle:

    (1) Does anyone know if Oracle supports our RISC/ULTRIX platforms?
The person I talked to at Oracle said yes, but it sounded REAL
        shaky.

    (2) I have read the bad things about Oracle and VAXClusters
in this conference. Are most of them still true? (Poor/No
AIJ support, lack of lock manager support, etc., etc.). I
need to make sure I have the latest information.

    Thanks for any help,

    Jim Smith

Re your 1st question...Yes ORACLE supports ULTRIX VAX & RISC with
    the db & tools.

423.2DependsQUILL::BOOTHWhat am I?...An Oracle?Mon Sep 11 1989 16:4711
Re your first question...It depends on where you are. In the US Oracle
supports Ultrix/RISC. In Europe, it is both yes and no, dpending on
where you are (or the mood of the local Oracle office). In the Pacific,
it is rather hit or miss as well. Field people are getting a veriety of
    answers from Oracle.

As to the second question, Oracle V5 will run, though poorly, on
multiple nodes in a VAXcluster. However, the new V6 Oracle cannot run
on more than one node simultaneoulsy.

Please read notes 206.5, 397.3, 367.2, 273, and 295 regarding Oracle on
clusters.

For information on Oracle in SMP, please read 349.2, 349.4, 324.1.

For your specific questions:

- Oracle V6.0.x DOES NOT run in SHARED MODE (oracle term) in a VAXcluster
	.... period !!!

- AIJ support is just OK. My customer who is using V6/TPO in production
is getting ready to start spooling AIJ to tape in a couple of weeks. I'll be
spending some time with the dba and system manager in the Los Angeles benchmark
center this Thur & Friday so I'll quiz them on AIJ support in general. Since
V6/TPO DOES NOT run in SHARED MODE in a VAXcluster, who knows how they intend
to handle AIJ for VAXclusters. The documentation I have points to a segmented
AIJ file where the dba must manually tell each node which parts of the AIJ file
to use.

- Up until a few weeks ago, Oracle had been telling my customer they intend to
write their own lock manager. However, after the mis vp and development mgr
returned from Belmont, they were told that Oracle told them they were planning
to use VMS lock mgr. So who knows. It really doesn't matter HOW they perform
VAXcluster row level locking as long as the total environment performs.

If you want any other specific details, send me mail and I will be glad to
help.

"They" had a full page Ad in Computerworld Australia (Sep 8th) with
pictures of various computers connected by a red line, titled:
Shouldn't your DBMS run on all your computers?

    Phrases included:
VAX/VMS users specify ORACLE Version 6 more than any other RDMS,
because ORACLE is the fastest RDBMS available.

Oracle is the #1 DBMS for UNIX workstations, including the new
    	RISC-based DECstation 3100, [...]

For an unprecedented 3rd year in a row, ORACLE was voted the No. 1
DBMS by Digital users. [I couldn't find reference to the anywhere!]

ORACLE is the preferred choice on the VAXstation 3100.

Other references include stating that "Rdb will not run on ULTRIX".

And my favourite: After their own copyright and trademark statements
    - "The other companies mentioned own numerous trademarks".

Martin, this refers to the Digital Review award in the Database
    category I believe.
