407.0. "Rdb/VMS equiv. of Ingres description ?" by YUPPY::FISKEA (I think I should have planned ahea) Tue Aug 22 1989 12:55

    A customer I am working with is interested in replacing their Ingres
    application database with Rdb/VMS. However, they have made me aware
    that there is an excellent overview document describing the Ingres
    database which is provided by RTI that they would like our equivalent
    of for Rdb/VMS.

    Is anyone out there familiar with this document, is it so hot, should
    we aim to have an equivalent of it ? Meantime any suggestions on
    what Rdb/VMS description I should provide the customer with would
    be appreciated. I can't think of anything between the glossies (+
    information management handbook) and the manual set at the moment.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Alison Fiske.

407.1"Overview of Rdb/VMS" in documentation, but...YUPPY::FISKEAI think I should have planned aheaWed Aug 23 1989 14:167

    In the end I've copied the "Overview of Rdb/VMS" section from the
    "Introduction and Master Index" Rdb/VMS document. Whilst this does
    seem to provide quite a reasonable overview, it's a shame we don't
    have a glossy equivalent of it to hand out in pre-sales situations...

407.2Available separately on-line ?YUPPY::FISKEAI think I should have planned aheaWed Aug 23 1989 14:208
    If it's generally a good idea to use this overview separate from
    the document set, then is it possible that this chapter can be made
    available on the net so that it can be printed off as required,
    rather than photocopied (tacky) ?

    Just a thought....

407.3Here, Here!TOWNS::BUZZERDWhy NOT Rdb ??Fri Aug 25 1989 00:467
    I agree... I've gone to enough customers' offices and seen half-inch
    thick ORACLE Technical Overview documents, and we've had only a
    collection of reprints, glossies, Primers, etc. to give them. It leaves
    the customer with nothing to review when they're going through the
    competition's technical stuff. And that leads to alot of phone calls,
    and that leads to ... discouragement. I think it would help us in
    presales situations quite a bit.
407.4Here?KIKETT::NICHOLSON_PAMon Aug 28 1989 21:0416
    Here's one document to consider in some situations:
    	VAX Rdb/VMS
    	An SQL Overview

    	Order Number EA-M1217-54
    	(March 1989)

    It's divided into four parts:
    	Introduction
    	Database Setup
    	Data Access
    	Application Programming

    I agree that more Rdb presales technical literature would be helpful.

407.5That's a GREAT idea!DPDMAI::DAVISGBGil Davis DTN 554-7245Fri Sep 01 1989 17:5010
    I know the marketing folks are reading this..

    Mike? Vickie?  Hal?....

    Could we think in terms of a technical summary similar to the
    vaxcluster Quorum? Something that would describe the features of Rdb
    for the technical user, mixed with a little marketing verbage?

    Seems to fit in very nicely with KO's advertising methodology.

Should I be flattered or insulted to be called a marketing person?

    I'l' be flattered at being called an engineer, if you'll be flattered
    to be called a marketeer.

    Otherwise, we'll both have to be insulted.

407.8Does 377.0 help?SNOC02::ANDERSONKThe Unbearable Lightness of BeingMon Sep 04 1989 16:216
    You guys talk to the field - you should both be flattered that someone
    remembered your names : it means someone knows you're useful to them!

    re .5 I have a mishmash of stuff about V3.0 slanted with ORACLE in mind
    (never explicitly mentioned), in VAX DOCUMENT SDML source form, posted
    in 377.0
407.9Be flexible!DPDMAI::DAVISGBGil Davis DTN 554-7245Tue Sep 12 1989 21:468
    re .6 and .7...

    The obvious answer is to carry business cards with interchangeable
    titles....

    and when the sales rep says "what's your title?"

    you can reply "What would you like it to be?"
