406.0. "Rdb and Optical disks" by DPDMAI::DAVISGB (Gil Davis DTN 554-7245) Mon Aug 21 1989 20:53

Can someone give me some ideas about interfacing Rdb with the RV20/RV64
    optical storage products?

    Some knowns:

o As I understand it, they are basically tape-oriented devices to the
system...i.e. random access is not as clean as with a conventional
    disk...

o Since they are WORM technology, they're not really conducive to
being used with a database manager like Rdb. (that needs to change
    header data on a disk...)

o They COULD be used as an extension of a database to store textual
info that is pinted to or indexed by a relational database that runs on
    a conventional winchester-disk device.

I have a customer that wants to implement a 250 GB database on 2 RV
    64's, with an accompanying SA600....

Let's use this to start a discussion about how WORM technology and
Relational Database can be used together....

What does this have to do with competition? You should move this
request to the BANZAI::RDB30B conference to get some real discussion.

Sorry Hal, between customer presentations I was having a hard time
keeping up with the versions of the Rdb Notes conferences....I got my
    answer at summer school anyway...thanks.
