Has anyone run up against PRIME Computer's relational DBMS named INFORMATION? I have an opportunity with a large company that is currently a PRIME shop running a home-grown estimating application written in INFORMATION. They are considering a shift to a VAX/VMS platform, so a conversion would eventually need to be done. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks. Regards, Steve McVey DTN 445-6406

I do not know much about INFORMATION, but it may not be necessary to do a conversion in the short run, as I believe there is a PICK board that can be put into VAXes. This approach may allow the customer to quickly get rid of the Prime machine and convert at a later stage, when they are ready. With this approach you get to sell an extra VAX (:-) Regards, Michael | |||||

The boards Michael is talking about are from Ultimate Corp who were an SCMP for a while. I believe that they no longer have any marketing arrangement and have dropped support for VAX based solutions. The boards were UNIBUS only from memory. INFORMATION is a PRIME implementation PICK which is normally an operating system and a `database' combined. I know nothing about the operating system but believe that the database is basically a hashed file system. It is programmed in a language similar to basic. Paul Tanner (snoc02::tanner) once worked for PRIME R&D on INFORMATION development and support. He can probably provide additional information about the product. He may not be much help on conversion issues. There is a notes conference HUMAN::PICK_OS. Good luck, -mark |
