Hi, I'm a Database Sales Support Specialist that needs some help addressing a customer's concerns about RDB vs PACE from WANG. They have been using PACE for the last year to support an information database for the state's highway and travel department. The users are VERY happy with PACE and appear to be resisting a change. The following seem to be the priorities for them: - User friendly application/4GL access to database - Distributed Database capabilities - Utilize current knowledge base/experience levels. I've had the opportunity to review the Introduction to PACE manual and it appears to be quite user friendly. Since the customer is being directed by another department to transition to VAX, I would like to help them feel comfortable with DEC's ability to meet the requirements they are currently supporting with PACE. Additionally, I think it would be very helpful to be able to differentiate RDB. I would appreciate any input related to - - competing with PACE (What worked well for you?) - using PACE (How is RDB (and/or DEC) different/better?) Any input is appreciated! Sharon

394.1 | VAX RALLY is a good way to go !!! | SNO78C::BELAKHOV | Oh, my god, it's full of stars. | Fri Aug 04 1989 08:11 | 7 |
Have a look at VAX RALLY in my opinion it is better than PACE and Rdb/VMS is certainly a much more comprehensive database than anything that WANG can offer. There is a myriad of 4GL's and tools which talk to Rdb/VMS, so between RALLY and the third party solutions you should have a very good story to tell.

re: the "user friendly" access. If Rally is too un"user" friendly for your customer, try Smartstar. I have a customer that loves Smartstar. Since my customer is using CDD+ and Smartstar provides integration to the CDD+, it was a good fit for us. I try to position Rdb as having an open architecture which actually gives the customer a number of choices and styles to access the database. For instance, SAS (statistical package) has a direct interface to Rdb, Teamdata for non-workstation users provides some graphics (pie, bar, etc) on VT330, VT340, DECdecision on a workstation has direct access, and all the 4gl vendors such as Smartstar, Focus, Informix etc.

re. .1 & .2 Thank you both for your input. Looking at the PACE documentation and talking with a contact that has experience with the WANG product confirms your input to focus our customer's attention on RALLY and/or other 4GL solutions that work well with RDB. re. .2 Thanks for the added info about SAS working with RDB. Just yesterday someone asked me about using SAS with RDB and I was planning to look into it today. Thanks for saving me the time! Sharon

Hi, Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is laurent BRIQUET, and I work in the swas group in paris for ten month. Before I was working for four years in Wang company. The most important difference between PACE/RDB are: - non existent SQL language with PACE - PACE use compiled dictionnary, so no interactive changes are allowed. _ HLI language with PACE (Host Language Interface) is only macro-instructions wich are inserted in cobol programs. - Application Builder (L4G) could be compared to RALLY. With it you can create an application wich allow: . creation . update . delete . query . select records...... but only on database table. I hope that these information might help you, and if you need more information, send me a mail on PRSNRD::briquet regards laurent BRIQUET |
