| VIDA with ORACLE is not currently a product. I think everyone is
confused as to whether or not the product is being developed ....
Anyway, *if* it is being developed, it's certainly not at the point
that it can be discussed with customers -- unless there's been a
program announcement that I missed.

| There is no VIDA for Oracle. Where do these stories get started?
You can currently use either Access/Star from DB/ACCESS in California
or SmartStar from SmartStar Corp (formerly Signal Technology). Both
will access Rdb and Oracle. There is no need for a VIDA product to do
this.

Micheal,
Is there any information in the system on the products ACCESS/STAR
or SMARTSTAR? Do we have agreements with DB/ACCESS or SMARTSTAR?
Are we recommending these products to our customers?
Thanks,
Larry

| SmartStar is a CMP. Their number is 800-235-5787.
DB/Access has no formal relationship with Digital. However, you have
probably seen all the hype that Cognos is pouring into its new StarBase
and StarGate products that will "connect PowerHouse on different
hardware technologies." The StarGate connectivity was largely achieved
by packaging a lot of DB/Access capabilities into StarGate.
DB/Access is 408-255-2920.

Within the past year, the Field was asked by the VIDA product group what
sort of need/acceptance there would be for a "VIDA for Oracle" product.
It appears they were at least considering it at one point.

Considering it or not, no such product has been announced or program
announced and therefore it does not exist. Most importantly, even the
potential existance of such a product should not be discussed in an
unrestricted notes conference.
If you need to discuss the need for a "VIDA for Oracle" you should
contact DBS Product Management.

| I didn't mean to imply that there is such a product or program. I was just
responding to Michael's question about how such a story got started.

| I like what this says. I agree wholeheartedly that we need tools to
allow customers to convert from Oracle to Rdb. I can use such a tool right
now. The memo is correct is that VIDA for Oracle would endorse Oracle and
severely damage our strategy. I can see the viability of supporting VIDA for
IBM since they are bigger than Digital, but to endorse a vendor who is
smaller than us is like handing them cash from Digital's bank account. Let's
get rolling on the robust conversion tools. I think I could give you a field
test site right now.

| To continue this a little, by market share numbers, the next target
should be SQL/DS on the IBM side. Beyond that, everyone on the IBM side
is a very minor player (well less than 10%).
Then, how about HP Image, Turbo Image, and the new ALLBASE. Since HP
owns right at 80% of its database market, and HP equipment and
applications are almost universally involved at Digital sites, such
interoperability would be of great assistance to us, and also should be
relatively easy to position since HP has such substantial market share
in their installed base.

| There is an RSVP company that has an Oracle to Rdb database converter.

| The RSVP company mentioned in .12 is TRIFOX.
TRIFOX has a nice 4GL product with the look and feel of Oracle's
SQL*Forms. The product is called TRIM/APP, and they have a report
writer called TRIM/RPT. TRIM/APP and TRIM/RPT can access both
ORACLE and Rdb/VMS. TRIFOX also developed QMX, the QMF-like query
tool now available from Oracle. Unfortunately, QMX does not work
with Rdb.
In their efforts to win more TRIM/APP accounts, TRIFOX has developed
a SQL*Forms --> TRIM/APP application converter. This product was
displayed at DU:IT. SQL*Forms ORACLE applications can be converted
to TRIM/APP applications. TRIM/APP applications can access both
ORACLE and Rdb. TRIFOX is currently modifying their product to
support DECforms. Their converter will be able to convert SQL*Forms
applications to TRIM/APP applications using DECforms, thereby losing
the look and feel of SQL*Forms.
For more information about TRIFOX, contact Chuck (NOVA::) Stata.
