381.0. "INFORMIX Information Needed" by OSPREY::ANGUS (Angus MacAlpine - SWAS Scotland) Thu Jun 29 1989 14:38

We have just recieved an operational requirment from a customer
which specifies that we must propose Informix.

Can anyone give me any ideas i.e. :-

    (1) What type of 4GL tools are provided ?

    (2) Do the 4GL tools run on RDB and if so how do they talk to RDB

    (3) Does it run on both Ultrix and VMS ?

    (4) Anything else ?

    Thanks in advance

    Angus

INFORMIX does NOT supply their own database system on VMS, they use Rdb/VMS!
I assume they talk to Rdb through dynamic-SQL, but can't remember for sure.

> (3) Does it run on both Ultrix and VMS ?

On Ultrix you can buy the INFORMIX tools which come with a not very
sophisticated database system. Or, you can add INFORMIX TURBO which is
a modern high performance database system that also works with all their
tools. As for VMS, see above.

> (4) Anything else ?

We talked to INFORMIX about using their technology for the upcoming
(program announced) DEC database software for Ultrix. The technology
looked good and the people were a delight to deal with. I wouldn't
hesitate to deal with them in the future.

Do you mean that Informix dbms is not available (can't run) on VMS ?

Informix does have a VMS database. But it is very poor, and they are
becoming a tools company. Consequently, they should be content with
    selling their tools on Rdb.

    Thanks Michael,

that you know, would it be possible and realistic a solution
ACMS/Informix ? And if so, what would the problems be ?

I'm just getting ready for a technical talk that I'm going to have
with an almost-customer who is used to Informix...and would like to
try ACMS. Of course I'll try suggesting a better dbms...Rdb, but just
    in case....

The question is, can the Informix precompilers and/or development tools
properly interface with ACMS. I don't know.

    P.S.

Since Informix-4GL is compiled, it may well be feasible to do
    Informix/ACMS.
381.6Informix customers => Rdb/VMS CustomersCOOKIE::BERENSONI'm the NRAFri Oct 27 1989 01:473
Informix came out with a rdbms on VMS and then decided to can it and go
with Rdb/VMS. All Informix customers are supposed to receive a copy of
Rdb/VMS as part of this.
