CONVERTING FROM ORACLE TO RDB.......ANY EXPERIENCE? My account, Monsanto, has spent >$4M on Oracle and is very unhappy. They would like to convert to RdB but are not prepared to lose what they've invested in Oracle. I'm looking for an account who has made such a conversion and is willing to talk to Monsanto and share their experiences. I'm also looking for any 3rd party who has a product for this purpose/ consults in this space/ etc. Anybody out there able to help?? Joe Rich @ALF DTN: 351-7069

Joe, Just a guess, but wouldn't trying to do a quick-as-possible conversion bring along a lot of those Oracle features which they don't want? Seems to me that in most cases, 3gl/decforms would outperform just about anything Oracle has to offer... Just a few thoughts to get some dialog going....this is an interesting note. Regarding note 378.0, I'm looking for about the same thing; though the customer wants it to, preferably, be someone in the NY City area and also someone using Rdb from the financial sector. The customer is Prudential-Bache, and they are currently using Oracle, and looking to switch to Rdb for cost reasons. I was called in to provide some technical backround on Rdb. However, they wish to use SQL, which I have little backround in, and in our version specifically, even less. Also, I'm finding it to be a difficult situation since the DBA of the group seems most against going to Rdb (basically, because he would have to become a true DBA) and I'm getting frustrated on how to place Rdb against Oracle in their situation, its rather a strange idea they have on what a relational database is, but that's another story. So, if someone knows of a customer who has gone thru an Oracle to Rdb "conversion" and/or even a customer in the finacial arena who uses Rdb and loves it, I'd be most appreciative to hear and talk to them too. Thanks, Kate @DTN 338 - 5548

The latest Newsbooth (Vol III #11) talks about a migration tool "Smartstar Migration Tool" which will alow a user to "port" from one relational database to another - even the SQL is transformed. Also another tool is mentioned for conversion from Oracle to Rdb in that same article. Michael Booth might have more info on this. John.

Send mail to Mr. Booth at QUILL::BOOTH and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to edit his distribution list to add your name. And maybe even point you to a few back issues...

Colorado's Center for Migration Services has a conversion program that converts ORACLE databases and applications to Rdb/VMS. The contact is Tom Koski. The conversion is accomplished using a Third party called Trifox (please refer to Trifox notes). The different between Trifox and Smartstart is Smartstart will not convert the SQL*FORMS triggers, which is about 85% of the application. Jay Wang |
