375.0. "Sometimes I get so torqued off!" by CSOA1::CARLOTTI (I have an Erie feeling about this...) Fri Jun 23 1989 16:49

My customer bought Rdb and is now evaluating 4gl "tools" to run on top of
Rdb.

One of the vendors is our buddy, RTI (Ingres).

Their salesman presented the Ingres Tools to the customer and went away with
some technical questions to follow up on. Here are a couple of the answers:

Q:	Are there any additional database administration issues as a result of
	installing Tools-for-Rdb?

A:	There are no additional responsibilities. However, you may elect
	to use certain INGRES commands because they provide greater
	flexibility than the corresponding RDB command. For example, the
	INGRES "COPY" command provides additional functionality.

Q:	Does INGRES' Tools-for-Rdb interface with the CDD?

A:	Currently, INGRES Release 5 does not, however, Release 6, which is
	scheduled for September/October 1989, will interface with the CDD.
	Our people tell me that our active data dictionary provides far
	greater benefit than the CDD. However, we expect that the CDD will
	be significantly enhanced in the not too distant future.
	Apparently the CDD is geared more for RMS files currently.

At least they copied me on this letter (why stab me in the back when you
can insult me to my face?).

I guess I'm just reiterating: "Be careful with third party tools vendors...
some of them are also our competitors"!

P.S.:	Actually, ALL of the tools vendors are our competitors (with all
	due respect to RALLY and Teamdata)!

375.1Is he talking about CDD or CDD/plus?DPDMAI::DAVISGBUh Oh...another Balloonist!Fri Jun 23 1989 19:152
    Sounds like someone needs to educate these folks about CDD/plus...

375.2I agree - be careful with ISV'sGUIDUK::HEALYAlan Healy, SWS/SEOTue Jun 27 1989 22:1813
    I agree about being careful with these guys... we brought in Ingres to
    show their tools because a customer had the perception that Teamdata
    and Rally are not good tools.

    After seeing Ingres tools, the customer was very unimpressed. The
    Ingres rep said "Gee, I wish I could show you our CURRENT tools - these
    are the 'old ones'". Customer: current tools? "Yeah, they're really
    neat - but they only run on our database right now". Customer: let's
    see the new tools.

    Result: Ingres sold their database along with their new (V6) tools.
