363.0. "SQL*NET ON PCSA" by HGOVC::ANNAHUI () Wed May 31 1989 10:51

    DOES ANYONE KNOW WHETHER THE SQL*NET OF ORACLE CAN RUN ON PCSA?
    IF YES, IS THERE ANY REFERENCE SITE? ANY PROBLEM OR ANY SPECIFIC
    AREA THAT NEED TO WATCH OUT?

    Yes, there is a SQL*NET driver for DECnet-DOS. The biggest problem is
    memory. Version 5.1B of ORACLE on the PC is supposed to relieve the
    memory situation to some extent. Prior to 5.1B it was just about
    impossible to run an application because parts of DECnet and the SQL*NET
    drivers occupied a significant portion of memory below 640K. 5.1B
    allows the ORACLE tools to run in extended memory through the use of a
    Protected Memory Executive (PME). Note this is extended memory, not
    expanded memory.

    Is there any chance you can talk to the customer about SQL Services
    and Rdb?

363.2Do I have choice?HGOVC::ANNAHUIFri Jun 09 1989 05:4215
    Dale, Thank you.

    I would very much like to talk about Rdb and SQL service, but the
    problem is only Rdb is not good enough, user needs interface too.
    Oracle provide a rather convincing tools since most of the developers
    are conversant with SQL and Cobol.

    Among all the 4GL that can integrated with RDB, which one do you
    think that can be of competitive with Oracle in this situation?

    Best regards

Recommend RALLY as a 4GL. It is much better the Oracle's product.

    SmartStar for the VAX/VMS only environment.

    If PC development is required, either PowerHouse, Focus, or Ingres
    Tools.
