Hi, I am currently trying to get some information on the latest version (v6.?) of INGRES using notesfiles etc. I copied the document 'INGRES Features and Functionality' (note 159) dated 31-May-1988 which I found very useful but compares Rdb/VMS v3.0 with INGRES v5.0. I need to know what changes/updates if any have been made to INGRES v5.0 especially in the following areas : 1. I see from page 38 of 'INGRES Features and Functionality', table 3 that Ingres does not support any dynamic SQL statements (PREPARE, EXECUTE, DESCRIBE etc.) is this still the case ? Also is it true to say that as EQUEL is not compiled until run time, by using EQUEL one can achieve the same end result as by using dynamic SQL ? 2. Still no concept of record clustering with INGRES ? 3. Is Ingres's maximum record size still 2008 bytes ? 4. Does Ingres now provide the ability to have multi table constraints ? 5. Does Ingres now support NULL values ? 6. What new data types have been added ? Does INGRES have an equivalent 'varying string' (vchar?) datatype ? 7. Still only trailing blanks and nulls of a field compressed ? Thanks in advance for any help, John.

I do not have the INGRES documentation to re-do the comparison, however I believe that all of the limitations you ask about are still in place. The only thing they really addressed in V6.x was performance. All the inherent functional limitations remain.

>The only thing they really addressed in V6.x was performance. All the >inherent functional limitations remain. I am not shure at all. I used to work for INGRES distributor, and I have some connections with employees of that company. As i have been told, version 6.X includes some functional improvments like: Null support and windowing. Arie

I am not 100% on these. I'd say about 90% certainty. Jim <<< Note 31.0 by GALVIA::BROSNAN "John Brosnan PTG Galway" >>> -< INGRES v6.0? >- Hi, I am currently trying to get some information on the latest version (v6.?) of INGRES using notesfiles etc, I posted a note in Rdb_VMS_Competition conference but haven't obtained the required information. I need to know what changes/updates if any have been made to INGRES v5.0 especially in the following areas : 1. Ingres v5.0 does not support any dynamic SQL statements (PREPARE, EXECUTE, DESCRIBE etc.) is this still true for v6.0 ? Also is it true to say that as EQUEL is not compiled until run time, by using EQUEL one can achieve the same end result as by using dynamic SQL ? << Rel 6 has Dynamic SQL. EQUEL is embedded, not dynamic. 2. Still no concept of record clustering with INGRES ? << Yup. 3. Is Ingres's maximum record size still 2008 bytes ? << not sure. Still limited though to a relatively small size. Thanks in advance for any help, John. |
