327.0. "Ingres on Wall Street" by DPDMAI::DAVISGB (Let's get Relational!) Wed Apr 05 1989 18:19

Ingres Paints up The Town - Wall Street Computer Review (4/89 - P 6)

The battle of the relational databases is starting to sizzle on Wall
Street. Ingres, by Relational Technologies, Inc., Alameda, Calif., is
beginning to some sizeable sales. Turnkey Solutions, a New York
software developer, recently selected Ingres as part of a back office
settlementsystem it is designing for an automated trading system. The
technology boutique is tailoring Ingres to handle multi-country
instruments, with different currencies and settlement dates.

In a separate action, Chase Manhattan Bank designed a bond redemption
system with Ingres for State of Israel bonds that has been operating
since September 1988.

"We went from processing 500 to 2500 transactions per day," says Jay
Palevsky, information systems officer. Israel issued many bonds
during the 1973 war, which are coming due now. Chase's bond
application operates on a Digital VAX 8530 minicomputer, supporting 40
users. Chase selected Ingres about five years ago, before Palevsky
joined the bank.

Although Oracle's larger market share means Oracle programmers are
easier to find, Chase still selected Ingres. Why? "Architecturally,
we think it's a better product, and secondly, RTI gives better
technical support," says Palevsky. But the race between Ingres and
Oracle continues. Both plan to release on-line transaction processing
(OLTP) versions of their software.

And did you know that according to an article in InformationWEEK
(April 3, 1989, p 14) by Charles Pelton and Kara Myers...

"Relational Technology's goal is to have Ingres tools become the
standard for working with proprietary systems. THEY ARE ALREADY
BUNDLED WITH DEC'S VMS OPERATING SYSTEM..."

Isn't that precious ???
