We have a Digital OEM who sells a product based completely on Ingres. The application is written in C with QUEL (400K lines of code). Since Release 6 of the Ingres Tools for Rdb will only support SQL, we are trying to encourage them to convert the application to SQL so they could layer it on top of Rdb. Anyone out there been through a QUEL to SQL Ingres conversion? We need some help sizing the effort and RTI has no migration tools or documentation. Thanks....

I have not been through any QUEL to SQL conversion, but I know both quit well. (I used to work for INGRES distributor). I believe it will not be an easy task. I believe it should be done manualy. I think it will be something like RDBPRE conversion to VAX/SQL. There are some QUEL features that no equivalent SQL exists, most of them in complex multilevel (nested) aggregations. If they are using this kind of QUEL commands, it should be translated to set of SQL commands working with some temporary tables. Hope it helps Arie | |||||

Check with Signal technology. Smartstar was originally written for QUEL. They have much success at migrating customers away from Ingres and onto Rdb. ---- Michael Booth |
