311.1 | Why no RDB? | BMT::NG | Thomas K. Ng, NYFD, 334-2435 | Tue Mar 07 1989 21:37 | 4 |
| I saw that book at a college library a few weeks ago too. Does
anybody have any guesses on why RDB wasn't included? (And SYBASE was!!!)

You'll notice that with the exception of IBM's databases, no system
vendor's products are discussed. Its all 3rd party products. Remember
that DEC doesn't market products (at least not software products), we
market "systems" or "solutions". So, Rdb/VMS has very little market
recognition even though it has lots of marketshare! Also, many people
who haven't had a need to evaluate database systems recently still think
of Rdb/VMS V1.0. This is probably more true of researchers than anyone
(and a researcher authored this book).
It would help if DEC published more papers (which would expose the
research community to our work), but that tends to be a low priority
when you are up to your a** in design and coding.
