	Does ORACLE communicate with DB2?

	If so how ?

	What do they use a communication protocol ?

	Thanks,

297.1Yes, but not WellBROKE::BOOTHWhat am I?...An Oracle?Fri Feb 03 1989 16:0622
    Yes, in two ways.

    Oracle tools can run on an IBM mainframe and make calls to a resident
    DB2 database.

    Oracle has a product called SQL*Connect that can be installed on
    a mainframe. That product will allow an Oracle database on a VAX
    to communicate with the IBM DB2 database via an SNA/Gateway.

    Note that SQL*Connect will cost exactly 50% of the price of the
    Oracle RDBMS on said mainframe. In addition, if the customer is
    using MVS/XA (who isn't with DB2?), Oracle will tage him for another
    service called "/XA Support". I think they will also have to but
    SQL*Net to make the whole thing work.

    Then once it's installed, the discovery is made that the only
    communication is through Oracle's SQL*Plus interactive SQL. In other
    words, none of the other Oracle tools have direct access to the
    DB2 database. They must call pre-written SQL*Plus routines to get
    to the IBM data.

297.2Access DB2 from VAX (instead ORACLE)TRNAF1::QUAGLIAThu Jun 22 1989 12:429

    How I can perform data access to DB2 data base ?

    True is that ORACLE needs SQL*CONNECT and other products (SQL*PLUS)
    to get data, but we can directly access only to IDMS/R data base ...
    via VIDA products.

    thanks    from LQ

        How I can perform data access to DB2 data base ?

	I suggest you contact Anne CREDIT::Thomas who is the VIDA product
    manager.

    My understanding is that VIDA for DB2 is being announced this month.

    I have used the FT version of this product and was very impressed
    with the quality and performance of it.

    Please do not allow ORACLE in to an area where I believe we have
    the best story to tell in the industry.

    Regards,
    Michael

    Actually VIDA for DB2 was "announced" in the June 12 '89 Sales Update
    pg 4. The official channels tell me the press conference will be July
    11th, so I guess that's the real date.

    And of course there is the requisite Notes conference at
    CREDIT::VIDA_DB2.
