282.0. "Need Something Like PC-FILE+" by MDVAX1::DUNCANG (Gerry Duncan @KCO) Wed Dec 28 1988 22:49

We have an excellent opportunity to integrate 400-500 PC users onto a
VAXcluster at a large customer in town. At this time, these people are
using a product PC-FILE+ V2.0 as their "database" management tool.
PC-FILE is a standalone product designed to let novice (and I mean
novice) users create flat files and forms to input/query data.
(Database is a compliment since the majority of these applications fall
    into the list filing category.)

We want to position Rdb as the database engine with Rally/Teamdata
for some of the more sosphicated users. However, I have yet to come
up with a simple end-user tool for these many novice users.

At this point, we would prefer to not bring in Smartstar (which
the customer saw at Decus and likes a lot), Focus, and, heaven forbid,
    Oracle.

Are there any "near term" 4GL, filing type products available that
    I could propose/discuss with our Rdb/Rally/Teamdata solution ??

     too.)

Hmmm. I suggest that you look into the Ingres tools for Rdb. I don't know
much about the tool set, but I *think* it contains and easy forms package.

You might look at The Synergist from Gateway Systems in Okemos
Michigan. They specialize in cooperative processing between PCs
and VAX machines, and their Rdb interface should be ready by now.
