271.0. "Oracle V6/TPS Benchmark Params" by MDVAX1::DUNCANG (Gerry Duncan @KCO) Tue Dec 13 1988 21:35
During a V6/TPS benchmark this past weekend, I noticed the following
INIT.ORA parameter in the V6 DBA guide.
Parameter: PRE_PAGE_SGA
"If set to true, then all pages of the SGA are paged into each user's
working set. This parameter is VMS-specific and is primarily useful
during benchmark testing."
My guess is that this would be especially helpful when performing
tests including large queries with few updates.
Another one to watch for:
LOG_CHECKPOINT_INTERVAL. This controls when the SGA buffers are
written back to the database by setting the minimum number of VMS
blocks required before the write is to be forced. Setting this
number high and coupled with small databases could cause very high
transaction rates on small databases. The result if this parameter
being too high would cause the system to become CPU bound for a
period of time only to become disk i/o bound at a later time.
Having been through 2 of these V6/TPS benchmarks, be advised to
insist on a review of the INIT.ORA parameters and gain access to
a DBA manual so you can review their uses. Always insist on
configuring your benchmark to match expected customer business
scenarios, and not for artificial need or purposes.
