262.0. "AS/400 & SQL" by LACV01::NEEDLEMAN (things can go from bad to worse but then they repeat) Wed Dec 07 1988 19:46

"Alert: SQL/400 Available" (SAA PLANNING SERVICE, Alert# B039,
	Nov. 10, 1988)

IBM announced the availability of the SQL/400 product which
provides support for the SQL interface to the OS/400 relational data base
system on AS/400 processors. AS/400 users can now begin making use of SQL
for interacting with the OS/400's relational database. This makes the level
of relational database interface consistent across IBM's SAA environments.
IBM will add OS/400 support for distributed relation data access at the
level currently defined by SAA, probably within the next 24 months. Other
relational database vendors will announce SAA-compatible SQL support
beginning next year.

It's my understanding that the SQL is read-only.

262.2Plenty of holes, for now.CHECK::JANDERSONFri Dec 09 1988 18:538
According to a Forrester report SQL/400 is only a subset of SAA
SQL that sits on top of the AS/400 relational database. In another
report by someone else (forget who) the AS/400 relational database
is the same as the S38 "embedded" relational database.
Forrester all stated that "if IBM cannot fully implement full SAA
SQL on a new machine, how can it ever retrofit SAA SQL to older
    systems that will support SAA.
    Lots of holes, for now.
