253.0. "Multi-gigabyte Rdb win" by HGOVC::KEVINCHAN () Sat Nov 19 1988 07:40
Early this month, our customer ComputAsia, a subsidiary of Hong
Kong Telecom, has agreed to use Rdb as the DBMS for their corporate
data repository. As a pilot project, the Billing System for Hong
Kong telephone customers (some 2 millions) would be converted from
Univac to VAX computers. A rough estimation has placed the system
as dual 8820 spining 40 spindles of RA82's. The raw data supported
is about 10 Gigabytes using about 20 Gigabytes of disk space. The
TP software accessing this database is ACMS/TDMS/COBOL. The 4GL end-user
tool is FOCUS. (Sorry, RALLY, we tried very hard, but Rdb has to
be preserved from being clobbered by Oracle)
As the size of the database is un-precedented, we are actively seeking
a Rdb guru for a 2-3 month assignment in Hong Kong. If you are
a Rdb guru and do not know whether you want to stay in Hong Kong
that long, please reconsider and ask your friendly travel advisor
about this "Pearl of the Orient".
We also would like to share experience with anybody out there
who has or is attempting to implement multi-gigabyte databases in the
field. If there is a multi-gigabyte Rdb club, we would gladly be
active participants.
Please post reply here or send VAXmail directly to HGOVC::KEVINCHAN.
Best regards, Kevin.
