242.0. "ORACLE; being different with Rdb." by VAOU02::ICAESAR (Ian Caesar (VAO DTN 638-6933)) Mon Nov 07 1988 23:17
I would like to acquire some independent reports on Relational
Database Management Systems, CASE and information retreival tools for
a customer who is in the process of evaluating these products in
conjunction with the evaluation and selection of a Geographic
Information System. The database vendors include: ORACLE, Digital
(Rdb) and Ingres.
If we have subscriptions to consultant reports, or regular technical
reviews by independents, where would they be? Are there any special
issues which we have and which are applicable here?
ALso, in this situation, ORACLE is widely accepted as the database
of choice, since it has been marketed by a major ISV in the GIS space.
This ISV, while hinting at supporting Rdb, does not make any commitment.
We are very likely competing against "the norm" rather than the sales
efforts or product of ORACLE -- the fear of the customer to be different
than all the other customers. Has anyone had a similar situation with
Rdb and ORACLE and a good success story where "being different" (with
Rdb) really paid off?
