216.0. "Distrributed solution without DECnet???" by NEWVAX::TSHAW () Wed Oct 12 1988 20:15
I have a thought provoking question for your adventurous dbms-ers.
What type of solution would you recommend to a university network
that was willing to incorporate a variety of hardware -
including VAX, HP3000's, IBM4341, NCR Tower and over 2000 IBM
PC's and compatibles - and a database (or databases) that had to
adhere as closely to industry standards (Ethernet and TCP/IP) as
possible --- WITHOUT USING THE 'D' WORD (DECNET)?
The first pass at a solution has to include standards such as TCP/IP
and Ethernet but cannot use DECnet even in discussion. This does
not mean that we cannot use it later after they see what we have
to offer. I am frustrated and feel as if I was told to give a speech
with my hands tied behind my back (and most of you know how hard
it is to talk with out the use of your hands). We have so many
solutions for them with DECnet, but cannot bring them up yet.
I have been looking into Ingres, Focus and even Oracle, but it seems
that most of them use DECnet as their backbone to PC conectivity.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what database product or products
to use--or how to talk about them without mentioning DECnet in the
solution? Anything would be appreciated.
Regards,
Terry
