I have a sales project where a customer is choosing a computer to run his business systems (like Sales/Purchase Ledger etc.). Presently the customer is using ORACLE in their other activities (on Stratus). So Rdb is out - too bad. Our main competitor is HP with their RISC gadgets. To beat HP I need some info on ORACLE. 1. Do any of you know how we are benchmarking with ORACLE against HP? I have heard that HP claims to have three times better performance than VAX, of course no data or specs shown. I would like to beat them with cold facts. So any pointers appriciated. 2. Can any of you confirm whether ORACLE can exploit SMP? 3. How does ORACLE run on HP RISC machines? Oracle runs very well on an HP machine as far as I have heard. Even if it didn't, the HP machine is vastly less expensive, and Oracle on the HP tops out at $64,000 whereas on an equivalently powered VAX, Oracle costs around $104,000. Oracle VAX vs. Oracle HP is a commodity-box win. That is not our forte. ---- Michael Booth | |||||

Also, Oracle & HP just announced a cooperative marketing agreement for the ORACLE Financial products...which are currently only avail on VAX and SEQUENT machines, with HP & many others to follow soon. In general, the HP price/performance advantage over VAX is just as noted in.1....a RISC commodity box win. You will have to go far beyond the basic HW & SW areas into service, networking, enterprise level solutions, etc. with VAX to crack the nut against HP. Mark |
