During my benchmark last week in LAX, the Oracle person loading 5.1.22 on the system told me that Release 7 will have referential integrity !!!! I also found out that Oracle LAX has 3 pre-sales people for all of Los Angeles. Looks like Oracle is not getting challenged on technical merits which means the customer is buying the flashing sales pitch and "portability" messages. Also, during the development of this benchmark (against Honeywell/Oracle) I located a person who has been a beta test for Oracle V6/TPS and also ran some of their benchmarks. This person tells me that the current version 6.0.20 still has problems and he/she believes that it probably won't ship in November as planned and, instead, believes that it will be after the first of the year. Finally, another source at Oracle described the difference between V6 and V6 with TPS. Seems that what will ship first is V6/TPS and it only goes to customers who pay the 50-60% uplift. (Having a maintenance contract does nothing more than give you the luxury of paying this big amount for performance.) For the customer that wants only V6.0, they'll have to wait while Oracle "backs out" the TPS modifications. The regular customers who want simple ole' row level locking won't get theirs until later next year !!! (It's true ... that is EXACTLY what this tech person at Oracle told me !!!) Gerry Duncan

207.2 | Oracle V6 will have record level locking | DEBIT::DREYFUS | Mon Oct 10 1988 15:42 | 38 | |
> That is a valuable piece of information. I can now continue to > sing the tune that ... Orcale has no record locking.... I would be carefull here. Oracle does have record level locking in V6.0 with TPS - the release they will probably sell if performance is an issue. I would try to position V6 with TPS as follows: 1. Oracle offers performance and row level locking for an additional 60% of license cost plus maintenance. Rdb/VMS offers performance and row level locking as part of the package. Rdb/VMS has had row level locking since V1 in 1984. 2. Oracle requires current sites to pay an additional 60% (depending upon machine) for the next release of the product. Something that they may have expected as a result of Oracle's very high maintenance costs. Oracle customers are quite pissed-off that they are being hit for another 60%. What next software update will Oracle customers expect as part of the package for which they will actually be billed? Rdb/VMS customers get their updates as part of the maintenance agreement. 3. Oracle V6 with TPS is in beta now with 170 level 1,2,3 bugs which they hope to fix in two weeks. They are just starting to work on archiving algorithms. They plan on production at the end of November. Would you trust a product that was beta'd (field tested) for one month? Remember, this is the first release with record level locking, on-line backup, fast-commit, deferred-write, etc, etc. --david |
