197.0. "INGRES on an LAVC?" by BRILLO::NOBLE (10 days in an elevator) Tue Sep 20 1988 13:28
I have a customer with an established MicroVax Ingres development
environment. I'm trying to work out the best way for that customer
to get more developers into the same INGRES database. We shall be
recommending that they put a memory upgrade in the microvax for
starters, but then I'm wondering if anyone knows:
Does INGRES make full use of the LAVC environment?
The scenario that I was going to propose is this: An LAVC consisting
of x Vaxstations using the Microvax II as a boot node. This gives
them data integrity. However, it raises the following questions:
* If INGRES runs two processes per user, will they split out, so
that the front end runs on the satellite and the back end on the
boot node?
* Is there any advantage to them using workstations over terminals?
For example, will INGRES C and COBOL compilations happen on the
local satellite workstation, (which is desirable) or the boot node,
(which is not)?

197.1 | Their say-so... | BRILLO::NOBLE | 10 days in an elevator | Wed Sep 21 1988 16:59 | 12 |
| Hi
Just for your interest - INGRES claim that their product does work
in a desirable fashion over LAVCs. They claim that front-end processing
takes place on the satellite workstations and back-end processing
on the boot node.
They also have sites at the International Commodities Clearing House
in Minories, London, and at the State of Jersey which are running
INGRES development on LAVC.
