184.0. "PC/FOCUS or PC/PowerHouse??" by KYOA::FARESE (If a database is involved...) Mon Aug 29 1988 19:38

    I have two possible sales situations where Rdb/VMS could be chosen,
    but I need to have a PC front end, for data entry as well as general
    query and reporting. It is an office environment, so we're not
    talking about any TP type computing. Some of the extracted data
    would be used by other PC products such as LOTUS, etc. A 4GL
    development environment is necessary. The competion is ORACLE.

    I have looked at MULTIPLEX and it's not appropriate for the
    data entry function, but it's great for the query/report function,
    especially since they only charge for the VAX server, not for
    individual PC licenses. I have also read Note 88 and will get
    some more info on Synergist.

    I really need to know how well PC/FOCUS and PC/Powerhouse can
    work in an Rdb/VMS environment. Can I develop applications with
    read/write access (and decent performance) to my Rdb database?
    One of the customers is familiar with FOCUS already, so if PC/FOCUS
    can do the job, this could be a plus for Rdb.

    Has anybody really USED these products (PC/FOCUS and PC/PowerHouse)
    with Rdb? You don't always get a straight answer from the vendors
    on a products limitations and performance.

184.1PC/FOCUS - check for write interfaceRDGE44::ANDERSONTue Sep 13 1988 19:1013
    I am not sure about PC/FOCUS and its link into RDB, but here goes.

    PC/FOCUS is almost as powerful as IBM mainframe FOCUS but it may
    be slower on PC (unless you are comparing with a mainframe with
    a heavy load).

    But one thing you have to check out is if PC/FOCUS can write into
    RDB databases. At the moment, it is not possible for VAX FOCUS
    to write into RDB databases since the interface is read only. If
    it is the case with PC/FOCUS you may have a problem since it is
    likely for the client to require data entry facilities on the PC.

184.2No relational PC-VAX capabilityCHECK::JANDERSONThu Sep 15 1988 16:464
    I called Info Builders in NY, a sales rep stated that PC-Focus
    will R/W to RMS files on a VAX, not Rdb/VMS. He then went on to
    say that VAX Focus will write to Rdb/VMS on a VAX.

184.3CMP Directory PublicationCHECK::JANDERSONThu Sep 15 1988 16:517
    In case you did not know - there is a Digital publication called
    Cooperative Marketing Program Directory which can be used for
    "first pass" qualification of CMP SCMP product functionality.
    "Second pass" qualification would be a check on what the product
    really can do as opposed marketing claims or inaccuracies in the
    publication!

184.4(very) little PC/Powerhouse info.CGOS01::MHAMMELDick, you're fired!Sat Sep 17 1988 03:446
    PC/Powerhouse uses a PC version of a database from a company named
    'Interbase'.  I don't know if it reads/write Rdb/VMS, but I doubt
    it.
