174.0. "LACK OF RDB FIELD SUPPORT?" by CHECK::JANDERSON () Tue Aug 16 1988 15:12
I do a "lot" of PID presentations on "VIA", mostly Rdb these days,
and hear all sorts of odd reasons why a particular 3rd party database
vendor has ALREADY been chosen by the account.
Sometimes the reasoning is sound, if disappointing, howabout the
following tho.
An account in New Jersey is going with Cullinet's IDMS/SQL with
full field encouragement.
The reasoning apparantly behind this is:
1.Rdb has poor press.
2.Lack of field support for Rdb.
3.Cullinet application development tools are the best.
Cullinet even went thru the trouble of putting together a complete
proposal, dont forget with DEC field support, to this account.
I have lots of stories like this, my real question here is ,
how serious is the "lack of field support" for DEC's software
products out there?????
I note that the NY NJ area seems to be particularly prone to "selling"
3rd party software. Do they get the 3rd party support AFTER THE
SALE of that software, or do they end up supporting it themselves
anyway???
