===================================================================
Cincom Systems, Inc., a Digital CMP, now offers SUPRA for VAX systems, a
relational database management system. SUPRA replaces Cincom's ULTRA
relational DBMS for VAX systems.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
SUPRA for VAX systems is an easy-to-use, flexible relational DBMS that
provides the high performance required in production environments.
To simplify migration, Cincom is offering a program so that current ULTRA
users can move quickly to the more powerful SUPRA environment. The improved
design of SUPRA's Physical Data Manager (PDM) offers users improved
performance. Initial performance tests indicate that SUPRA on a VAX 6230
computer is 300% more powerful than Cincom's ULTRA V1.5. To document
performance, Cincom plans a more comprehensive benchmark on several VAX
configurations and will publish the results.
Cincom, a Cincinnati-based firm, supplies application development software
and manufacturing and financial applications for the VAX/VMS platform.
SUPRA is fully compatible with Cincom's VAX/VMS product line, including:
o MANTIS, a fourth generation application development system;
o CONTROL:Manufacturing, a comprehensive, integrated planning and control
system that supports discrete, repetitive and project-oriented
manufacturers; and
o CONTROL:Financial, a financial management system that integrates fully
with CONTROL:Manufacturing and provides full support for manufacturers'
business and accounting functions.
SUPRA for VAX systems is comprised of several components designed to provide
a complete suite of functionality. The Relational Data Manager (RDM) gives
users a logical, relational view of data while the In-Line Directory
provides a central repository for information that describes the
organization's complete data base.
A straightforward, advanced relational query system, SPECTRA enables end
users to retrieve information without having to fall back on procedure-based
methods. The Physical Data Manager (PDM) manages the data structures of the
physical files that store data. To assist programmers and database
administrators, special utilities make designing, testing and modifying data
base systems easier.
SHARING VAX APPLICATIONS WITH IBM SYSTEM USERS
SUPRA for Digital systems is fully compatible with SUPRA for IBM. Under
SUPRA, IBM and Digital system users can share applications. In keeping with
Cincom's philosophy, MANTIS, CONTROL:Manufacturing, and CONTROL:Financial
are already portable and compatible across Digital and IBM environments.
SELLING/MARKETING STRATEGY
Digital sales representatives can promote the Digital-IBM compatibility in
the Cincom space. Likely VAX prospects are Cincom/IBM customers who want
distributed systems in their existing configuration, or are looking for
alternative computing solutions.
In some cases, Digital sales representatives have sold Digital systems to
replace IBM installations that run Cincom software.
SUPRA ADVANTAGES
SUPRA users can integrate their existing VAX applications. Any current
applications or Digital Command Language procedures, for example, can run
from within SPECTRA or MANTIS, giving users a seamless environment.
Customers can protect their existing investment because SUPRA integrates
with data stored in Digital RMS files. The database navigation and data
manipulation functions are fully automated so that end users can access
information easily.
SUPRA provides better control by automating
o the management of data redundancies;
o the integration of existing data;
o the enforcement of business integrity rules; and the
o optimization of data access.
In addition, SUPRA provides full recovery capabilities normally associated
with production-oriented Database Management Systems.
VAXcluster SUPPORT
SUPRA provides VAXcluster support, including distributed data access and
VAXcluster failover. The relational DBMS takes full advantage of Digital's
VAXcluster architecture and provides for systems growth and CPU failure.
With an operator controlled "preferred machine list," SUPRA will allow
automatic restarting of the DBMS and all applications on nodes pre-specified
by the user or system manager. In case of failure, operations will move to
a machine that can handle the work load.
To provide better VAXcluster services, Cincom re-wrote SUPRA's Physical Data
Manager from scratch. The result is a PDM that offers users very high
performance, making the most of the VAX computer and VMS operating system.
With the re-write, Cincom's PDM is multithreading and provides complete
input/output overlap, driving the I/O subsystem to maximum capacity.
THREE SCHEMA ARCHITECTURE
SUPRA is built on a unique Three Schema Architecture that meets ANSI
standards. The layered architecture defines an organization's data on three
levels.
The levels include an external, conceptual and internal schema. The
external schema defines how the users see data, independent of how or where
the data is physically stored, while the conceptual schema defines the
corporate model of the database. The internal schema contains the physical
data definitions in terms of data structures and access methods.
Three schema architecture insulates each layer to free applications from
their dependence on the physical and logical structures within the database.
SUPRA OFFERS BETTER PERFORMANCE, INTEGRATED CAPABILITIES
In all, SUPRA for VAX systems can improve ULTRA users' performance and
improve productivity. SUPRA provides simple, easy access to information
while maintaining data integrity.
The Digital-IBM applications compatibility and transportability make SUPRA
on VAX systems extremely attractive in today's mixed vendor environments.
