150.1 | let INGRES provide INGRES ref. sites - we sell Rdb/VMS! | BISTRO::WATSON | can we have summer now? | Thu Jun 23 1988 10:29 | 13 |
| I hope that this note has been posted only after your attempts to
do the following have failed:
(i) Sell Rdb/VMS.
(ii) Persuade INGRES to provide their own reference sites.
I also hope that the customer is aware of (ii).
This conference will not be used to do INGRES's job for them.
Andrew.
ps Alex - not rrying to pick on you, but I think that we all need
to remind ourselves of things like this from time to time.

150.2 | Don't need a reminder, thank you | MEO78B::LANDSBERG | Things look great from Down Under | Thu Jun 23 1988 11:19 | 19 |
| Andrew,
In answer to your questions.
(1) Yes we have tried to sell RDB. The customer is already using
INGRES and is going to stay with it.
(2) We have asked INGRES (Australia) for reference sites and they
have been slow in answering us. As the customer is coming in
for a talk tomorrow we wanted to have at least something.
I know that this is an RDB notesfile. But I have been looking around
for another appropiate notesfile and couldn't find any. This one
seems to have quite a lot of information on ORACLE and INGRES. I
have not been the first to ask for reference sites in this notesfile.
I refer you to #49 - Oracle/VAX Reference Sites.

150.3 | if the customer's mind is really made up, then... | BISTRO::WATSON | can we have summer now? | Thu Jun 23 1988 14:21 | 11 |
| Glad to see you don't need reminding that INGRES is a competitor.
And you are right, if the customer has already decided to use product
X, and if they will choose a hardware platform other than DEC to
run it on if we can't help them, then - and only then - this is
the appropriate notes file.
Good luck, although I hope that INGRES end up doing their own job
rather than you having to do it for them,
Andrew.

150.4 | GE - Aircraft Engines uses INGRES/VMS | WLW::SHUCKTIS | | Thu Jul 14 1988 19:45 | 20 |
| GE - Aircraft Engines is currently using INGRES/VMS. GE - Aircraft
Engines has standarized on INGRES as their relational database product.
There are two applications currently developed using INGRES/VMS.
Both are Manufacturing Shop Floor applications. One applications
is used to maintain the "BUILD BOOK" data for jet engine assembly
and to keep track of parts used in the assembly process. This
application currently runs in a three VAX node cluster of an
8500, 8650 and 785. There are currently 110 simultaneous users.
The other application is a Factory Manufacturing system for
time vouchering, parts tracking and sequence of operations for
the manufacturing of engine parts.
Both systems are integrated to other applications, on the VAX and
on IBM / PRIME systems.
If you need additional or specific information regarding these
applications, please contact me.
