144.0. "Professional Oracle" by FENNEL::SLACK () Mon Jun 06 1988 19:59

I just got off the phone with an Oracle rep and found it interesting
that Oracle has a Professional Oracle for the PC environment. Their
product runs on VAXMATE. Hardware requirments is that 1 meg is
needed for the system, and 2 meg for the application. 2 meg isn't
necessary, but DEC sells the cards in 2 meg increments.

For $199 Oracle sells the developer version of PC Oracle. This
version cannot be used for selling developed applications as 3rd
party. It's intent is for development usage only. For $1295, the
Professional Oracle may be sold along with the application product
developed to run on the PC.

Basic PC Oracle [officially called Professional Oracle] comes with
RDBMS, FORMS, and SQL Plus. SQL Net is an option package that can
be purchased seaparetly. This will enable the user to define tables
locally and remotely thus enabling the user to query data distributedly
    [his words].

An example would be, for a Vaxmate user having access to Oracle
running in a VMS environment. The pc configuration needed to support
this distributed database is Professional Oracle, SQL Net and the QUERY
program to extract data across DECnet using the local tables.

They also have Professional Oracle to access Ultrix machines using
TCP/IP with SQL Net if the user doesn't want to use their Ultrix
    DECNet link.

Bottom line is Oracle is positioning itself to take full advantage
of futures in the open ended architecture that the presses have been
    reporting on.

This note is not endorsing the product, but merely presenting what
products are being made available to the pc user wanting to tap
large databases or create a more distributed database environment.
