131.0. "TERADATA DATABASE SERVERS" by SICW04::POWELL () Tue May 10 1988 17:03

    I was reading NOTE 120 with interest since I am also working with
    an account, Liberty Mutual Insurance, which has decided to use a
    Teradata system as a corporate database server in a DEC and IBM
    environment.

    Over the next several months, we need to prove to Liberty that our
    products allow us to easily coexist with the Teradata system in
    order to be selected as the platform for data distribution and decision
    support systems.

    We would greatly appreciate any information regarding:

    1) DEC products which interface with a Teradata system

    2) Any experiences with Teradata in a DEC environment

    3) Suggestions on how to talk Liberty out of this strategy

    The current direction for the DEC platform appears to be FOCUS as
    the 4GL and TCP/IP as the protocol between DEC and Teradata.

    Thanks in advance for your comments!

131.1Another plea for a DSRI/CLI interfaceWARMTH::JACKSONTony Jackson (WARDER::JACKSONT)Wed May 11 1988 12:3536
    Scott,

    I have nothing very constructive to offer you except to say that
    you are not alone in this situation ! Specific answers :-

    > 1) DEC products which interface with a Teradata system

        Until someone finds the funding to produce some kind of DSRI/CLI
        interface we cannot easily interface our products to the Teradata.
    	The DBC uses an SQL level interface to the host systems.

    > 2) Any experiences with Teradata in a DEC environment

        We have outline agreement with Teradata and a customer with
    	some large VAXclusters and Amdahls to perform some trials to
    	see how well the DEC/Teradata interfaces work. It will be some
    	time before this actually gets done.

    > 3) Suggestions on how to talk Liberty out of this strategy

    	Search me ! Can you suggest anything else that can allow
    	simultaneous access from IBM/DEC/etc to a relational database
    	that can perform searches at up to 500,000 rows per second ?
    	It's a very hard act to follow.

    > The current direction for the DEC platform appears to be FOCUS as
    > the 4GL and TCP/IP as the protocol between DEC and Teradata.

    Look on the bright side ! Teradata does allow VAX access. FOCUS
    is a very popular 4GL and the TCP/IP protocol is a lot faster than
    the ISO/OSI alternative. What we really need is a DSRI interface,
    just think of the possibilities... Let's keep asking and maybe someone
    will come up with a VIDA with TERADATA (or whatever) type product.

    Good luck.

131.2Potential interface developmentLOMBRD::BARTON_LAFri Jun 03 1988 02:4317
    I am still working with TERADATA, trying to put together a VAX/TERADATA
    pilot for the State of California.

    We are looking at two possible alternatives for a 4GL type interface.

    1. TERADATA may be interested in funding a DSRI interface if we
    can come up with a reasonable estimate for developing such an animal.
    The agreement they had in the works apparently fell apart.

    2. FOCUS is currently reviewing the feasibility of porting their
    existing IBM interface product to VAX/VMS. As far as I know this
    is an intial investigation being conducted by a local FOCUS
    representative, so I don't know how viable this is.

    I'd be glad to exchange contact names and more detailed information
    if anyone would like. Lauren (916) 361-6524.

131.3More TERADATA interest???LOMBRD::BARTON_LAThu Jun 09 1988 00:4019
    I just had a meeting with Teradata. They have been working closely
    with FOCUS, and have been told that FOCUS is planning to have a
    DEC/TERADATA interface ready sometime in Q3/88 Sep Octi timeframe
    seems likely. We have scheduled a meeting with FOCUS to discuss
    how "real" this product is and how likely the timeframe.

    According to TERADATA, FOCUS could move up the development schedule,
    and potentially have something available sooner IF there was a good
    business reason to do so.

    The question...

    Does anyone out there have a customer who may be interested in
    pursueing a DEC/TERADATA interface? Would this customer be interested
    if the interface was FOCUS? Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Thanks Lauren
