120.0. "INTELLECT support for TERADATA" by LOMBRD::BARTON_LA () Tue Apr 19 1988 20:26

Does anyone know why I can't seem to get into the INTELLECT notes
file. I get the Network Partner Exited" error message each time
    I try.

I am working with a customer now who wants to front end a TERADATA
machine with a VAX. We are looking for access software. They
have seen INTELLECT, it works on IBM, and is supported on VMS.
The question I have not been able to get an answer to is this: Does
INTELLECT under VMS have the TERADATA support?

If anyone knows of any other VMS or ULTRIX products which have TERADATA
support, or of any work being done to provide such support using
DIGITAL products (RDB,SQL) I would really appreciate the information.

    Thank you

As I understand it, Intellect never came across with DSRI
compatibility. Consequently, the DCS agreement expired. I believe
that NLI has brought DataTalker to Rdb capability via SQL. DataTalker
is an English language query tool as well.

I have never seen anything about Intellect interfacing with Teradata.
Intellect is made by Artificial Intelligence Corp in Waltham, MA.
    Try giving them a call.

Not, strictly speaking, being a "database person" (some genetic
alteration required I believe) I am ignorant of some of the acronyms.
Bottom line... What is an NLI? Were you recommending Datatalker
as a potential for TERADATA support? So many questions...
Thanks for the vendor name for Intellect I am calling them as I
    type.

120.4no Teradata support anywayLOMBRD::BARTON_LAThu Apr 21 1988 02:1014
    .1 and .3

Thank you very much for your assistance.

I am now back at "square 0", Intellect is indeed dropping their
VAX based product althought a spokes person at AIS stated that they
May in the future support a somewhat different product on the VAX.

They have never had a TERADATA interface for the VAX product in
    any case.

So I am back searching for a 4GL/AD-HOC Query product running under
VMS or Ultrix that supports the TERADATA.

Have you tried TERADATA ? It would be in their interest to know.

    RE: .5

That was kind of like "have you read the manual..."

Yes, I am working with TERADATA. They have a SQL interface that
is called from 3GL's. The customer would like some 4GL's.
Unfortunately the TEREADATA people here are very knowledgable about
IBM, and know little about DEC. My next step is to get a list of
all products supported on IBM, and call the vendors. I was trying
to find a short cut and a reference all at once.

    Thanks for the responses.

No offence intended...

From my discussions with Terradata they claim the followin "coordinated
    products" :-

    NOMAD2 - 4GL - Dunn and Bradstreet Computing Service
    FOCUS - 4GL - Information Builders, Incorporated

They have their own query facilities ITEQ and BTEQ.

Mind you, they also claim that INTELLECT is a "coordinated product"
and from what was said in -.n, that is no longer true.

Perhaps someone could build a DSRI to CLI/HICLI translator we could
use DSRI compliant products. I could certainly use it if such a
thing was to be written. Any takers ?

Please let us know if you track anything down in this area.

    Hope this helps.

120.9Could we do this?LOMBRD::BARTON_LAFri Apr 29 1988 00:0919
    RE .8

    	Tony your timing is incredible.
This conversation needs to be "for internal ears only..".
Teradata has begun negotiations to develop just such a product
    with an independent consultant who
apparently used to work for DEC and was on the DSRI "development
team?". The negotiations have bogged down for reasons they do not
    wish to discuss.
A representative from Teradata has asked if this is something that
Digital could do under contract to Teradata in conjunction with a
pilot we are proposing for a joint customer.

It would be of great interest to me to know who is also interested
in this product. The biggest challenge I have now is finding someone
in our district or area who is both available and capable to develope
    this interface.

Any further input would be greatly appreciated.
