98.0. "INGRES - need info." by TAVMTS::WIESEL () Mon Mar 21 1988 16:49

	I'm managing these days a project been developed by software house
	with INGRES.

	Since we've got responsibility for performance, I'm interested
	in information dealing with performances issues.

	My major interest is on MicroVAX 3600, but any other information will
	be appreciated.

		Thanks

98.1No numbers, but a nasty experience...BRILLO::BIRCHPeter Birch, DTN 842-3297Thu Mar 31 1988 16:5529
    HI,

    I can't give you any technical information regarding INGRES, but
    I run an account in the U.K. who have decided upon INGRES as their
    corporate DB system. We have conciously distanced ourselves from
    the software side of the project for obvious reasons.

    On the sizing/performance side, the customer was looking to support
    100-120 users on a Distribution Management System, with a telesales
    element to be added later. RTI originally sized the system at a
    twin 8200 cluster, with an option to go to three 8200s later. The
    idea was that they should suffer minimal degradation in the event
    of processor failure, so this was a kind of hot standby system.
    As the implementation went on it became clear that this was WILDLY
    undersized. They now anticipate being able to support the environment
    on a cluster of one 8200 and two 8700 systems, which they are planning
    shortly to upgrade to 8800s.

    The same company experienced a similar problem in another environment,
    where an OEM for RTI sized a system at an 8250, and it turned out
    that an 8530 / 8700 was more appropriate.

    So: I don't know whether this has been useful to you, but beware
    of any sizing done by RTI or its OEMs; it would appear to be, on
    the strength of these experiences anyway, extremely dodgy.

    Cheers

    PDB
