74.0. "ORACLE and OLTP" by WARDER::MEAKINS (Clive Meakins) Tue Feb 23 1988 17:36

I've just returned from an ORACLE seminar - they mentioned a product
called TPS. They said that with TPS, airline reservation type
applications would be viable as it is 6 times faster than their
current database. TPS is not yet announced but should be coming
    soon.

Has anyone heard of this product? Is it a new database product?

Am I correct in thinking we achieve this level of performance with a
    single product (Rdb v3)?

Interesting, this product has been called several names, *TPX, *TPS,
and *TPSS. Originally Oracle ran around telling everyone it would
be 10 times as fast as the current Oracle, so "it will do 28 TP/1
TPS on a VAX." That means the current Oracle by default only does 2.8,
    right?

Now, they are scaling back to 6 times as fast. Well, I don't know
about you, but I've seen precious few airline res. systems that
would be accommodated by 16.8 TPS. They must be talking about damnably
small airlines, or damnably big cpu's.

Please be aware that the new *TPS module will require an ADDITIONAL
LICENSING FEE. While, the new Rdb will be an upgrade, the new Oracle
software will be treated as a separate entity, and will require
new charges. As far as I know, performance has been upped as indicated.
Also, the database can be backed up on line.

I would imagine that Rdb v3.0 will be quite similar in performance.

Rumor has it that Sybase performance outperforms SQL*TPS so Oracle
had to scale back claims and redevelop pieces of the product. Note
that online backup, good disk space management, and other standard
database functions will cost extra even to current Oracle customers.
Rdb is being enhanced with these types of features at no additional
    cost to the customer.
