60.0. "RDB/MV3600 performance?" by FHOOA::CAMPBELL (Pat Campbell (419)891-5411) Wed Dec 16 1987 04:35

    Do we have any performance info on RDB running on the MV3600? Also,
    my customer is being asked to offer an RDB other than DEC's as a
    possible alternative in a large, 20-site mfg database project.
    If we're "forced" to suggest an alternative, 3rd party rdb, are
    there any suggestions as to the "safest"? (Of course, I'll be pushing
    HARD our RDB/Teamdata/Rally approach, possibly including ACMS to
    aid performance...

    Thanks,

60.1What's Safe?AUNTB::BOOTHA career of MISunderstandingWed Dec 16 1987 14:387
      I don't think there is a "safe" third party database. However,
    InterBase would be third party but DSRI compliant. That would open
    up the toolset issue. You might double-check to see if the issue
    is really a third party database engine. Many people think they
    have to buy a different database to get a different application
    development toolset.

    - rdb performance on a 3600: take a look at note 442 in the rdb-notes

    - 'alternatives' to Rdb: try by all means to stay with Rdb, even
       if other development tools could be the solution.
       The database-system gives account-control !!
        (how often in the life-time of an installation will it be
         possible to select another database-system ? It is much
         more likely to select alternative development tools for
         'the next application to be developed' but the dbms usage
         will be hard to change.

    good luck - the 3600 really is a nice box.

60.3Why do they want an alternative?DEBIT::BERENSONRdb/VMS - Number ONE on VAXMon Dec 21 1987 17:278
What kind of answer do you want: one that provides a good alternative
to Rdb/VMS or one that will assure they pick Rdb/VMS instead? Why do
they want an alternative? What is their application like?

Ps: The only thing I would 100% avoid is ORACLE, where the company
rather than the product it sells is an issue.
