47.0. "FOCUS FRONT-END TO Rdb?" by CTOAVX::RITCHIE () Wed Nov 25 1987 14:07

I'm looking for all the information that I can get regarding the use
of FOCUS in a commercial environment. Our client was considering
the use of Oracle on a corporate-wide basis, but now is looking
for an alternative. They are interested in FOCUS/Rdb pairing:
Focus to get a common user interface that they can employ in a
multi-vendor (Digital, Wang, IBM) environment, and Rdb to optimize
on our relational expertise as applied to our hardware/software
    environment.

Since this client will deploy relatively intensive data entry
functionality as well and needs to get at the same databases, Rdb
gives the flexibility of allowing another front-end (ACMS, Intact)
in that environment. If any of you know the transaction processing
characteristics of FOCUS/Rdb that indicate/contra-indicate selling
a transaction monitor as well, I'd appreciate the input.

Reply here, send mail to CTOAVX::RITCHIE, of call DTN 325-1892.

    Thanks.

There is one problem that could hinder you. Focus at this point
will interface to Rdb and RMS, but READ-ONLY. They (IBI) are telling
me the write interfaces will be released in Spring, 1988. However,
last year they said Summer, 1987. So I wouldn't count on it too
    much.

Also, be careful on Intact. Last I heard, it didn't support Rdb, although
there may be work going on in the Intact world to get it to work (???).
And DECintact is not yet announced, so it would have to be a non-disclosure
situation for now, if you want to talk about it. Mixed messages in that area
are going to be difficult to avoid...
