42.0. "Teradata announce VAX support" by MINDER::JACKSON (Tony Jackson, NAC U.K.) Mon Nov 09 1987 16:57
An extract from a weekly trade paper...
"Teradata Europe has announced a version of its host software, VAX
Interface, allowing VAXs to access a DBC/1012 database computer system
directly across an Ethernet LAN."
The article goes on to say that the database engine can be accessed
simultaneously from DEC, IBM and Honeywell systems. The software will
run on uVAX II's upwards. Multiple database engines can be supported.
The VAX Interface consists of the Teradata Director Program (TDP)
system interface and the Basic Teradata Query (BTQ) which is the
company's query reporting product.
Available in January and costs 8,650 UK pounds for a VAX 8000. Note the
above price excludes the database engine, which doesn't come at all
cheap. Currently you also need a mainframe but the system should be
available standalone for VAX by mid 88.
A customer of mine already has this beast on a couple of Honeywell
mainframes and the performance is fantastic. Still, I guess we aren't
trying to hit this extreme high end of the market and so the Teradata
announcement will just help us sell more VAX's.
