13.1 | negotiations are sensitive | NOVA::BERENSON | Rdb/VMS - Number ONE on VAX | Tue Jul 07 1987 13:47 | 5 |
| This is an unrestricted conference, therefore no discussion of any
negotiations we may be having with another firm should take place.
When (and if) the persons at Digital and Cullinet negotiating (assuming
Digital Review is correct) want to let the rest of us in on any
agreements, then they can be discussed here.

(Sorry I didn't see the rag's article but...)
Other Published info... (I hope its not too old)
Cullinet acquired Esvel's Stellar Technology (in C) to be
ported to VAX/VMS environment.
Cullinet is re-architecting all existing Cullinet applications
to work with this SQL/relational technology for the VAX
environment.
Cullinet will market product as IDMS/SQL. Speculation is that
Cullinet will port this relational product to MVS in future
-- but its just speculation.
(Note: IDMS/SQL is renamed IDMS/D product)
(Unverified but saw published) that Cullinet's "two DBMSs <IDMS/R
and IDMS/SQL> talk to each other, which leads to having ADS/O
and the data dictionary on smaller (in terms of the departmental
or distributed environment) processors..."
previous quote from Gartner Group's SMS service
(E-034-303 "Case Study: Cullinet Strategies" 12/29/87)
Cullinet's IDMS Architect (CASE tool from LBMS with enhancements)
is already available for IDMS/R, no known plans for IDMS/SQL.
Dave Chapman "In 1988, the revenues from the VAX sector should
be about 30 percent of our total DBMS revenues."
Cullinet's focus will be on selling applications and tools.

13.3 | Final Reply, I hope | CEDSWS::BOOTH | There's madness in my method | Fri Jul 10 1987 05:15 | 11 |
| Let's finish this. IDMS/SQL will be available this Fall. It will
perform at about 25-30 Debit/Credit TPS on a high end VAX. The logical
view of IDMS/R and IDMS/SQL will be the same. Consequently, ADS/O
will be the same on VAX as on IBM. The current IDMS/R tools will be ported
to the VAX environment over the next 18-24 months. The name will
be IDMS/SQL. The original name was IDMS/Distributed, then shortened
to IDMS/D, then changed to IDMS/SQL to avoid confusion with IDMS
and IDMS/R.
None of this information came from the seemingly omniscent Gartner
Group! Honest to God, there are other sources.

I agree completely.

13.5 | Cullinet's VAX products | MJOVAX::WEINBROM | | Wed Jul 15 1987 04:54 | 49 |
| This afternoon, we just completed a demonstration of Cullinet's
VAX database and "application development system". The demo was
done in conjunction with Cullinet's DC Office, the developer of
the interactive SQL part of IDMS/SQL (from the former ESVEL) and
the product manager for Magic (the former AMCORE/EMCORE?) for the
Mechanicsburg Navy Depot. Both of these products are scheduled
to go into beta test at the end of this month. I don't know when
the announcement to the public will be.
Some interesting points:
o There is currently NO LINK and NO CONVERSION "tool" to go between
IDMS/R and IDMS/SQL. (i.e. No tools to convert IDMS/R
schemas to IDMS/SQL and no communication links between ICMS
and IDMS/SQL.) Cullinet told the customer that these
things were being developed.
o There is no conversion tools (yet) to go from ADS/O, Cullinet's
IBM development tool to Magic nor the other way. (The name Magic
is already taken and it will be called something else when finally
announced.)
o Magic is their appilication application development system.
It includes a screen generator, a report generator, a menu system,
a data dictionary (that interfaces to IDMS/SQL) and a
4GL.
o Magic is quite impressive in a demo. The output from it is very
"PC like" with windows, pop-up help and ring menus. It uses
a "screen painter" a la FMS/TDMS to define both screens
and reports. It has a 4GL that drives them. This 4GL
is then translated into COBOL or FORTRAN or BASIC. My impression
is that it is quite complete. In many ways it's similar to
Powerhouse, though the screens are much better than Powerhouse.
If you need more information, the Cullinet salesforce or at
least their DC office, is currently speaking to customers about
these products and doing demos.
Speaking only for this demo, I know that the Cullinet name made
the customer much more comfortable about the whole thing even though
the products aren't related. (They already have IDMS/R and ADS/O.)

Note: Rdb was not an option and not proposed. A decision of the
Salesforce (DEC's) and Sales Support Consultants. The subject was
closed before I came into the picture.

13.6 | Whoops! | MJOVAX::WEINBROM | | Wed Jul 15 1987 05:01 | 11 |
| Better make myself cleaer:
WE have a communication link to IDMS/R & ICMS. It's called VIDA.
CULLINET does not have a link.
Magic is "multi-tasking". It uses one process per user for the
screen manager, and one subprocess per "task" which is pretty much
anything that is not a menu. There is also an ad hoc report writer
(menu driven of course) called FASTINFO that is a part of Magic.
to implement their screens.
