415.0. "How to view page without stretching window?" by ZPOVC::POHING () Mon Mar 18 1991 05:12

I noticed that the VAX DOCUMENT generated book allows user to view the
entire page of a book immediately when the book is open.On the other
hand, if I create a book from DECwrite and export to bookreader, I will
have to "stretch" the window before I can see all the contents appear
    on a page .

Are there some parameters within VAX DOCUMENT that allow this feature ?

Is there a way which I could generate books using DECwrite with the
same feature? What about keeping track of the column size of the bookreader
book before the window is "stretched", does that helps?

If I understand you correctly, you would like to be able to generate:

    1. books with wider text columns using VAX DOCUMENT

    2. books which do not require resizing the window with DECwrite

The VAX DOCUMENT online designs use a text width that fits within the
Bookreader text window. It is certainly possible to alter the design to
use a wider margin (see the VAX DOCUMENT Doctype Designer's Guide). But
that means the user must resize the window in order to read the book
online and we believe that makes the documentation less usable. (In
other words, we don't think that online text that extends beyond the
    window width is a 'feature'.)

When DECwrite books are exported to Bookreader, the formatting
parameters are not changed to accommodate the Bookreader window. If the
style being used calls for 7-inch margins, that is what appears in the
Bookreader. There are DECwrite styles that are designed for Bookreader
and in which the text automatically is sized for the text window. But
that's a topic for the QUEEN::DECWRITE notes conference.

Right now, you cannot easily customize the size of the Bookreader's
text window. Bookreader cannot, at this time, automatically (dynamically)
adjust the window size to accommodate different margins in different
books. Various customization parameters have been discussed for a
future release of Bookreader: if you have a requirement for window size
customization, you should submit it via the
    DECWET::BOOKREADER-REQUIREMENTS notes conference.

    Hope this helps,

I guess I've failed to express myself clearly.

Actually, I was not looking for a way within VAX DOCUMENT that enables me
to create a page that requires stretching of the window before viewing.
But I am trying to find out if the DECwrite has a feature that
generates pages that requires no stretching at all. This is because I
noticed that books generated using DECWrite does not display all the
contents within a page immediately when invoked.

    I hope I am clearer now ?

    Thanxs.

That's a question for the QUEEN::DECWRITE notes conference. As stated
in note 1, this notes conference confines itself to issues/questions/
problems in building online books using VAX DOCUMENT.

As I mentioned in .1, I believe there is at least one DECwrite style
designed expressly for Bookreader output, such that the text fits in
    the text window without resizing.
