397.0. "online popup docmap may be missed by readers" by DOCTP::GRAVES (crafters do it with style) Tue Jan 15 1991 10:18

I'm having a problem with the DOCMAP and table that appears between
the copyright page and the TOC. We are afraid that the readers
    will miss it.

The DOCMAP is too big to be an informal
figure, you can't see all of the DOCMAP unless you scroll the
map. Online standards state that this should be made into a popup.
It looks ok as a popup. The problem is that the hot spot of the
popup appears at the very bottom of the copyright page. Unless
the reader scrolls to the end of the copyright page they will not
see the hot spot. There is no other reason for them to scroll to
the end of the page - therefore it is logical that they will miss
it.

Is there a way to get the hot spots that refer to the DOCMAP to
come higher on the copyright page or make the DOCMAP its own
topic? Or any other way to insure that the reader will see it?

DEC Standard 146-0 states that documentation maps should come
between the copyright page and the TOC. It seems, however, that
ONLINE.HAND, doesn't take this standard into consideration.

What would also be good is to have an entry in the online TOC for
the DOCMAP to appear before the preface. For example, in the TOC
the reader would see:

Title Page
Copyright Page
Documentation Map
Preface
Chapter 1
.
.
.

Since it is not a formal figure it doesn't appear in the TOC
under figures either.

Has anyone else had a similar situation to this or does anyone
have any suggestions on a work-around?

I will gladly supply any files for anyone to look at if needed.

Hopefully this problem will be solved when we use the CUP DOCTYPES
for these manuals. But for this release we are still using
    the old doctypes.

    Thank you for any help

397.1need some online doctype work...CLOSET::UTTMary UttTue Jan 15 1991 11:2912
I'm not familiar with DOCMAP but it sounds like some tag work is needed
to make this work well online.

I would suggest modifying the tags that generate the doctype so that
they are a separate topic after the copyright topic. (I agree: it
should *not* appear to be part of the copyright page -- no one will
    ever see it.)

Talk to the folks who support the doctype you are using. I would be
glad to consult with them on what needs to be done.
