389.0. "SYMGEN doc type - how's it coming?" by DLOPAS::FSDB71::DAVIDSON (Bill 'RED' Davidson @ DLO) Sun Dec 02 1990 20:53

   How it SYMGEN coming along?

   I'm on a project that is tight for time and adding symbols to our SDML
files by hand so we could create on-line documents is not high on our
priority list. Having SYMGEN would be one less obstical.

   According to the VAX DOC FT 2.0 release notes, the SYMGEN doc type is
not in the kit, but implies it will be in final release.

   Is there a pre-release of SYMGEN we can use? If so, where can we
snatch it from?

   Thanks in advance!

389.1Symbol Generator coming soon...VAXUUM::GRANTI've saved $2779.50 since I quit smoking.Mon Dec 03 1990 10:0519
    Hi,
    	I'm afraid that the symbol generator isn't available as a
    standalone tool. In our effort to make it more user friendly and to
    fix bugs it has become dependant on the latest version of VAX DOCUMENT.
    For example, it's no longer executed as a doctype (SYMGEN). Now, it's
    executed by enter the command:

    	$ DOCUMENT/GENERATE_SYMBOL/PREFIX=your_prefix filename

    We were also able to get it to generate symbols for files included
    using <ELEMENT> tags in the profile file and on files included with the
    <INCLUDE> tag.

    	I'm not sure about the availability of the latest field test update
    software (T2.0-2) but if you contact me by mail or phone I'll see what
    can be done.

    Thanks,
    	Wayne
389.2DOCTOR/ONLINE ?IJSAPL::KLERKMy cat is object orientedTue Dec 11 1990 12:5313
  Though perhaps not perfect, you may want to look at DOCTOR/ONLINE
  that adds labels and even <reference>s to pop up elements that had
  none specified in the text.

  See IJSAPL::PSQ:[PUBLIC.SOURCES.DOCTOR]*.*

  Use DOCTOR_NOCMS.EXE if you haven't got DEC/CMS installed on your
  system (or satellite). A .PS file as well as DECW$BOOK is available
  to read the documentation. Don't forgot /VERSION_1 if you process
  files for DOCUMENT V1.2 (default is /NOVERSION_1, i.e. V2.0 which
  also needs labels on <SUBHEADn>s).

389.3DOCTOR works!DLOPAS::FSDB71::DAVIDSONBill 'RED' Davidson @ DLO / DTN=486-6339Wed Feb 06 1991 11:1810
DOCTOR is a life saver...

I've been using the DOC/GEN stuff (see .1) with limited success - a few wholes
in the symbol generator and other problems with the FT have prevented documents
from being prepared.

I copied DOCTOR to my system yesterday and was finally able to build my
document into bookreader using VAX DOC V1.2B.

Thanks for the help!!!

    Gee, 'whole' was our goal...:-)

    Please post any problems (holes) you have encountered with the symbol
    generator here.

    Thanks,
