388.0. "An Experiment: Cross-reference to title page" by DECWET::SHUSTER (Write left) Fri Nov 30 1990 18:58

Is there any way to cross-reference the title page? I've tried a
number of unsuccessful methods, including the use of a header tag after
<title_page>, which gives me a BOOKWRITER ERROR:

BOOKWRITER ERROR--The following symbols are undefined:
            pgid =   6, offset =    189, symbol = 'MAIN_MENU'

From the symbol, you might guess what I'm trying to do: put a menu in
the title page. That's the easy part. What I want to do is let users
go back to that menu (i.e. the title page). And that's what I can't
do, using any of the cross-reference methods. I was wondering if I
    could "fool" Bookwriter somehow?

If the above is not possible, then is it possible to have Bookreader
first display a page other than the title page without screwing up page
    coordination?

You are using V1.2B, right? In that version (and all previous versions)
of DOCUMENT, the <headn> tags are redefined in the front matter so that
no section numbers and no TOC entries are issued. You can supply a
symbol argument but nothing is done with it (it is not entered in the
tag translator's symbol table). Therefore, a <reference> to it will
cause a failure in Bookreader device conversion. (See also Note 386.2.)
So, for V1.2B, the answer is no, you cannot cross reference the title
    page.

I just tried what you are trying on T2.0, with more success. You don't
want to use a <head1> tag (I don't think) because the default is for
<head1> tags to start a new topic. So you have to press More or
Previous to see the header after the title page. But the <reference>
from somewhere later in the text works fine.

I tried a <subhead1> tag and discovered to my horror that that tag
continues to be redefined for the title page, so it doesn't work at
all. We will look into this, but the fix will not be in V2.0 (too
    late).

I tried a <head2> tag (which does not start a new topic) and the
results were what I think you are looking for. The header text
followed the title and could be referred to from elsewhere in the
text. Since header numbers are turned off for the front matter, it
    looks fine.

However, it will probably be necessary to enforce strict heirarchies of
headers for the V3 Bookreader (because of its use of the SVN widget in
the TOC and index): see note 382 and replies. This means you will not
be allowed to specify a <head2> unless it is preceded by a <head1>. So,
<head2> is probably not a good choice. However, <head> works
fine and shouldn't run afoul of the header heirarchy.

    Thanks.
