I have a book that is crashing with an ACCVIO. Now, this book is quite large (it's NCL, so it would be, wouldn't it?), so to make it easy for reviewers to get at the parts they are interested in I've broken it into sections: one section per NCL module, plus another section for all the introductory chapters and the appendices. The odd thing is that each individual section compiles happily for online; it's only when I try to compile the whole thing that I get the ACCVIO. I've had the ACCVIO problem in the past, for things like online titles greater than 48 characters or footnote problems. In this case, however, I can't think of an error that wouldn't have been caught when I tried to compile the individual section containing the error. I've placed the LOG and DVI files from the compilation in a public directory, JANUS::CWALSH:[CWALSH.PUBLIC]. Chris

387.2 | Problem in .SDML files | VAXUUM::GRANT | I've saved $2781.00 since I quit smoking. | Tue Dec 04 1990 10:17 | 4 |
Chris found the problem. By fixing the source file and running with no VAX DOCUMENT warning messages, everything processed fine. Wayne

Well, folks, here we are again. The story so far... As indicated in the base note, I got the NCL manual to compile by fixing some items in the source that were generating warning messages (using <FCMD> without <FPARMS>, if you want to know). This appeared to do the trick, although to be perfectly honest I was always rather suspicious about why this should work. After all, if something is only a warning it shouldn't cause an error; if it's going to crash a build, it shouldn't be just a warning, n'est-ce pas? Anyway, time passes. Since the only certainties in life are death, taxes, and the fact that the NCL manual is never right, I updated the NCL manual. Most of the changes involved putting in <book_only> and <help_only> tags so that I could generate some online help (and thereby hangs another tail, but I'll save that for another note). The manual builds OK for hard copy, but again it won't build for online. I've eliminated any factors in the source that generate warnings, but still no dice. In addition, I now not only get an ACCVIO, but a CPU time limit exceeded message, which is a major first for me - I never worked that hard on anything before (and my manager agrees!). This suggests to me that something is looping somewhere, but what do I know, I'm only a writer. I've dumped all the relevant files in the same directory. If you can sort this one out you will have my eternal gratitude. That and 30p will buy you a cup of British Rail coffee. Chris
387.4 | need log file | CLOSET::UTT | Mary Utt | Thu Jan 31 1991 08:21 | 9 |
Chris, When I try to access your log file I get 'error in device name or inappropriate device type for operation.' Please either post the log file here (if it's not too voluminous) or MAIL it to me (it it is). Thanks, Mary
387.5 | looking into it... | CLOSET::UTT | Mary Utt | Thu Jan 31 1991 14:27 | 9 |
Chris, I copied your files. We are running a more recent version of the converter on our V1.2B baselevel: the converter did not ACCVIO but the build did abort. We'll look into it and post a reply. Thanks, Mary

VAX Document is under new management I'm not sure how closely the new owners are monitoring this notesfile so you might want to send mail to. Phil Nezballa MLTVAX::NEZBALLA who is the Vax Document project leader. Mike
387.8 | ACCVIO and Infinite loop problem solved by new Device Converter | UKCD01::MORRISON | Wed Jun 19 1991 10:37 | 14
I had a very similar problem. There was an ACCVIO during the device conversion phase. I made a simple change to the source (adding a simple <FOOTNOTE>) and then the device conversion phase looped forever (until I aborted it that is). I am using version 1.2-B of VAX Document. Following a suggestion from Mary Utt, I took a more recent copy of the device converter from CLOSET::KITS_:[DOCUMENT.V12B.SOFTWARE]DVC$BOOKRSHR.EXE and then it worked a treat. Thanks Mary! :-) (Best advice is to upgrade to latest version - we will do that soon I hope). |
