Note 22.0 Non-VMS/ULTRIX Docs 3 replies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm entering this note for the purpose of generating discussion concerning
licensing policy for non-VMS/ULTRIX product documentation. I recently completed
a manual describing how to use the CDA Base Services on OS/2 systems. Although
this document describes features and functionality relevant only to OS/2
systems, we've been asked to provide it for CD distribution anyway, in
accordance with CUP policy.
However, there is not as yet any official policy for specifying the LMF
tag information for non-VMS/ULTRIX product documentation in LP_BOOKNAMES.
For now, we're considering leaving all the LMF tag arguments in LP_BOOKNAMES
blank, except for the <lmf_altname> tag, for which the file maintainer will
specify the default BOOKBROWSER argument. This solution ensures that OS/2 book
titles appear in the library listing for those customers who order the
BOOKBROWSER option, and who are therefore interested in knowing the full range
of documents available on line. I assume they can then decide to purchase "read
access" to any of the books in the library listing.
We'd like feedback as to whether the scenario described above seems optimal,
or whether there's another more appropriate and more permanent solution.
Here's an example of what I assume the LMF coding would look like when
specifying the BOOKBROWSER option only for books in LP_BOOKNAMES:
<_lp_bookname>(CDA_OS2_TOOLKIT_UG\Using the CDA Base Services for OS/2)
<lmf>()
<lmf_producer>()
<lmf_product>()
<lmf_version_number>()
<lmf_release_date>()
<lmf_altname>(BOOKBROWSER)

this should be asked in the CLOSET::ONLINE_BOOKBUILDING notesfile.
Briefly, the idea is fine but your implemenatation does not have quite
the desired effect.
You must have the main tags filled in first in order for the alternate
to be there. If BOOKBROWSER is the only license, you need something
more like:
<_lp_bookname>(CDA_OS2_TOOLKIT_UG\Using the CDA Base Services for OS/2)
<lmf>(CDA_OS2_TOOLKIT_UG)
<lmf_producer>(DEC)
<lmf_product>(BOOKBROWSER)
<lmf_version_number>(0)
<lmf_release_date>(0)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, Joe's suggestion is the better one. In fact, the LMF tags will not
let you specify blank LMF fields as you propose (or at least you won't
be able to in DOCUMENT V2.0 in which the tags do a lot more error
checking than in the past).
He is also correct that a better place to discuss this would be
in the ONLINE_BOOKBUILDING notes conference. In addition, I believe
that the issue falls under the charter of Mike Cicalese's OLD Process
Committee, which meets bi-weekly in Littleton.

Joe and Mary,
Thanks for your prompt replies. We'll plan to use the BOOKBROWSER
option for now then. I'll add this topic to the other notes file you
mention.
