<<< W7_:[NOTES$LIBRARY]DOCUMENT.NOTE;2 >>> -< VAX DOCUMENT problems and questions >- ================================================================================ Note 7.0 VAX DOCUMENT V2.0 Announcement No replies TINGLE::ROBINSON "VAX DOCUMENT User Support" 37 lines 29-MAY-1990 11:17 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Digital's leadership efforts in producing and distributing online documentation containing text and graphics have created an enormous customer demand for graphics tools and online bookbuilding tools. To meet that demand, the CLIPPER program's "Wave 1" was established with the goal of bringing online documentation technology to customers as rapidly as possible. In response to this demand, CUP/ITG has decided to accelerate the delivery of the online bookbuilding capabilities of VAX DOCUMENT, and to bundle the RAGS graphics editor with VAX DOCUMENT. This accelerated delivery will be accomplished by "splitting" our previously planned V2.0 functionality into two releases. The first release, which will be called VAX DOCUMENT V2.0 and which we plan to bring to field test this summer, will contain the following functionality: - an ONLINE design and BOOKREADER destination - RAGS (for graphics creation) - I18N support for 14 European languages - a newly reorganized and rewritten docset - other enhancements as detailed in the product requirements and functional spec (many of which are currently released internally in VAX DOCUMENT V1.2-B) A Product Requirements document for the new V2.0 is available now, in CLOSET::DOC_V20:V20_REQUIREMENTS.PS, .LN03, and .TXT. The remainder of the project documentation for the new V2.0 (functional spec, development plan, customer support plan) will be forthcoming over the next several weeks. The second release (tentatively called V3.0) will contain the remainder of the high priority VAX DOCUMENT requirements. We expect VAX DOCUMENT V3.0 to be available for external field test one quarter after FCS for V3.0 of the DECwindows Bookreader. A preliminary Product Requirements document for VAX DOCUMENT V3.0 will be available soon. Complete project documentation for VAX DOCUMENT V3.0 will be available after V2.0 goes to field test.

Phase 0 has been open for some time. The VAX DOCUMENT team plans to close phases 0, 1, and 2 on 7/17/90. This compressed schedule reflects the advanced status of product engineering and our confidence that related planning is sufficiently in place to begin field test on July 23, 1990. The following plans are now available in .PS, .LN03, or .TXT format from CLOSET::DOC_V20: - Product Requirements: V20_REQUIREMENTS (replacing 29-May version) - Business Plan: V20_BUS_PLAN - Field Test Plan: V20_FT_PLAN - Development Plan: V20_DEV_PLAN - Documentation Plan: V20_DOC_PLAN - Phase Planner: V20_PHASE_PLANNER (schedule of milestones) The following plans will be available on or before 7/10/90: - Functional Specification: V20_FUNC_SPEC - CSSE Plan: V20_CSSE_PLAN - Internationalization Plan: V20_I18N_PLAN VAX DOCUMENT has been without product management for most of the V2.0 development cycle. Consequently, with product management coming on board in early June, our primary task has been to bring the phase review process up to speed with the actual state of development. This task of retrofitting the phase review process has reached the critical stage of publishing these product plans. Should you have comments on any product plans, please forward them to the plan's author by 7/16/90. For further information, contact Dean Fachon or George Pappas.

I want to know whether we should have it installed on a cluster that produces Bookreader output for the OLD CDROM (and so must support Bookreader V2.0). Should we stick with 1.2B? b

<<< W7_:[NOTES$LIBRARY]DOCUMENT.NOTE;2 >>> -< VAX DOCUMENT problems and questions >- ================================================================================ Note 3474.2 VAX DOCUMENT Writer's Tool Kit V2.0 Issues 2 of 2 VAXUUM::UTT "Mary Utt" 11 lines 16-APR-1991 08:38 -< Bookreader V2.0 *only* >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VAX DOCUMENT V2.0 generates Bookreader V2.0 files *only*. There is no support for Bookreader V3.0 in VAX DOCUMENT V2.0. However, there are some formatting enhancements and other new things, such as support for DDIF images, so we think the V2.0 Bookreader support is an improvement over V1.2B. For a lively discussion of Bookreader v2/v3 support, see the BULOVA::BOOKREADER notes conf, note 275. Mary |
