314.0. "<PREFACE_SECTION> can't be cross-ref'd automatically" by VIA::EPPES (I'm not making this up, you know) Wed Apr 11 1990 18:41

This isn't too important, but I just discovered it and thought I'd
mention it here...

The <PREFACE_SECTION> tag only takes one argument, the title of the
section. It does not take a symbol argument; therefore, it can't be
cross-referenced automatically in the Bookreader (the section title does
show up in the table of contents, though).

I don't know whether anyone ever cross-references a <preface_section>
from the main body of the book; I suppose one might want to if one is
using it for "Technical Changes and New Features" or something like that.
Anyway, I just wanted to point this out. It's not causing me any
headaches, personally... :-)

314.1Yep, it should be...RAGMOP::UTTWed Apr 11 1990 20:1412
Nina,

I don't know that this has ever caused anyone any headaches, but
it struck me some time back that the inability to cross refer to
the preface was inconsistent. So it's on the list of things to
make cross-referable-to, if I may coin YAUP (Yet Another Ugly
Phrase), for V2.0. Other things on the cross-referable-to list
are template (<routine>, etc.).

Thanks,

Mary

I knew you'd be on top of it, Mary! :-)

314.3What About Referencing <head1> tags in a Preface?TLE::ETZELMikeWed Aug 22 1990 11:5815
In addition to a <preface_section>, will it be possible to
cross-reference a <head1> in the preface?

The case in point is to refer to the "Associated Documents" in the
Preface, which is not a <preface_section> but usually a <head1>.

Such an attempt under V1.2B results in a .LOG file that contains:

BOOKWRITER ERROR--The following symbols are undefined:
pgid = 13, offset = 1245, symbol = 'SEC_RELATED_DOC'
%DVC-E-OUTPUTFAIL, error writing to output file

BTW, has anyone considered the list of associated documents as a
simple means of providing some cross-book (hypertext) capabilities in
the future?
314.4Added to wishlist.RAGMOP::GRANTI've saved $2626.50 since I quit smoking.Wed Aug 22 1990 15:025
I'll add this to the wishlist.

Thanks for the hypertext idea.
