313.0. "Memory capacity exceeded in index - doc.V1.2B" by HKFINN::ROSE () Tue Apr 10 1990 17:54

    Hi,

    We're getting a memory capacity exceeded error in the index of a
    VERY large book, similar to the error documented in Note 259. The
    problem is, we're using Document V1.2B, and STILL getting it.
    (We also looked for any <xappend>(<emphasis>()) tags, as mentioned
    in note 171.)

    Below is part of the log file (I left out the part that doesn't
    have any errors). We're trying to build this book for the May disk,
    and have run out of time. If no one can figure out a specific fix,
    does anyone at least know a work around? We've been commenting out
    the index entry listed, but then Document just processes a little
    more, and gives us another error.

    Thanks for your help.

313.1master index??RAGMOP::UTTTue Apr 10 1990 19:3118
    Betsy,

    I will check out a couple of things tomorrow morning when I am back
    in the office, but I notice that the file name says that this is
    a master index. Are you using the prototype master index doctype?
    If so, I should caution you that the emphasis is on the word
    *prototype* in that sentence (i.e., there are no guarantees...).
    Also, my understanding was that product management had decided
    that master indexes created with that doctype would *not* ship
    on the CDs because there was not sufficient functionality for
    a master index.

    It would be helpful if you could send more details about the
    doctype you are using, about how many entries there are, etc.

    Thanks,

    Mary
313.2"Index"HKFINN::TAYLORWed Apr 11 1990 10:4511
    Mary,

    Betsy Rose is my supervisor and she was helping me out. Since she
    will not be in the office today I will answer your message. The
    book in question is not a master index. S1369_master is the profile
    of the book. The book has a very large index. 15 pages to be exact.
    I am using the online.handbook doctype. I hope this is what you
    need to know.

    thanks...Diane

313.5See note 303.3RAGMOP::UTTThu Apr 12 1990 15:4313
    The problem reported here turned out to be essentially the same as
    the problem in note 303: an indexing bug involving the MASTER
    attribute. See note 303.3 for more information.

    In this case, there were so many page numbers associated with the bogus
    "comma" entry (well over 200) that the text formatter ran out of
    memory during online processing of the index. Diane removed the bogus
    entry from the xxx_INDEX.TEX file and was able to successfully complete
    the online build.

    Thanks for your files and your patience,

    Mary
