293.0. "Online Text in V1.2-B that should be translated" by PAULUS::BECK (Gudrun Beck - LEG Frankfurt, UI Group) Fri Mar 09 1990 07:13

    Hello,

recently we installed DOCUMENT V1.2-B and now have formatted some
files for the Bookreader. We still found some strings which need
to be translated and some other bugs:

    - At the end of the copyright page you get the sentence:
"This document was prepared using VAX Document, Version 1.2."
This sentence should be in German (or in any other country
specific language). Actually it is translated in
TEX$LANGUAGE_STRINGS.TEX. But in TEX$O_COMMON.TEX it is defined
again in English and it seems that this definition is used.

    - In TEX$O_COMMON.TEX (the version we got is dated 16-JAN-1990)
the string "FIGURE: Click to display figure" (for an online popup
figure) is hardcoded. It should be removed to TEX$LANGUAGE_STRINGS.TEX
and for Germany be translated into "Abbildung: Klicken Sie MT1".
Also, the word "FIGURE" in the online popup figure should be
      translated into "Abbildung".

    - The string "NOTE" in the footnote window should be moved from
wherever it is (we couldn't find it) to TEX$LANGUAGE_STRINGS.TEX
      and be translated into "Funote".

    - When a chapter or section title which is a hotspot breaks into a
new line then the whole text of both lines is put into the hotspot box.
(I think that was already reported for V1.2).

    Regards
               Gudrun

I'll let someone else address the translation problems, but I'll answer
your last point:

>> - When a chapter or section title which is a hotspot breaks into a
>> new line then the whole text of both lines is put into the hotspot box.
>> (I think that was already reported for V1.2).

This is a bug in the V5.3 Bookreader. It is fixed in VMS V5.4.

Hi Gudrun,
As Mary said in a reply to an earlier note, we're working on this.
Much of what you've noted is being fixed and will be available in a future
release.
	Thanks for pointing them out.

Gee, I was just about to report this problem too.

Wayne, the problem with footnotes is different from the other
translation problems. In this case the text is hardcoded within
the <footnote> tag. It gets passed into the TeX file as this:

    \topichunktitle{!NOTE whatever!}

    this should be

    \topichunktitle{!\Notename whatever !}

I did a quick test and it looks like this will work.

A similar problem exists for trademark, exacerbated by the fact that
the phrase "trademark" has not been translated in the
    tex$language_strings.tex file.

Here's the offending line from the definition of <footnote>:

    .
    .
    .
    <compare>(&$1|\TM\Trademark\Note))&)<eol>
    .
    .
    .

\Notename won't do. It is a coincidence in English that footnotes and
notes can be represented by the same word in at least some other
languages (in Hebrew they are definitely different). A macro called
perhaps \Footnotename needs to be added.

Also, I checked again, there are four offending places in the GDX
files. Two that are as shown in .-1 and two like this:

    <string>(_tag_text_arg\|<ifnum>(&$1|\Note &$1|\<eol>
